I know some of you also have hypersensitive smell. I'm looking for a way to cancel smell completely. Some people use essential oils to mask odors, but I'm not looking to add another smell to a bad smell. The smells I smell are not necessarily bad. They are just overwhelming. I want to eliminate or at least minimize them so that I don't get migraines. I can smell my neighbor's cigarette from 5 houses down the road. I can smell perfume in parking lots and 2-week-old residual air freshener in the bottom of public waste baskets. My coworker's deodorant is killing me. I can't go within 3 aisles of the laundry detergent in the supermarket without getting sick. I thought about wearing those masks that people use when they mow the lawn, but they don't fit my face right and they itch. I've seen nasal plugs online, but I don't know if they would be effective for smells. They are designed for pollen reduction. Has anyone used nasal plugs for smell reduction and can report on their effectiveness? Any other suggestions that don't involve adding smells?

Have you tried a surgical mask? It would look a little odd but some people do wear them. When the flu was going around school a lot of people who were either already sick or immunocompromised wore them. They're thin so I'm not sure how well they would work.

Naso filters! Google Healthnaso. They do plugs with anion emitting minerals which neutralize smells. They are big in Japan for some reason but as I work in an animal hospital I get faced with some pretty funky smells. :)

I'll have to look into those! Like OP, I often get overwhelmed by smells, and it would be nice to just smell nothing for once.

You asked for ways to help without adding a smell but I cant think of anything that hasn't been already said.

What immediately sprang to mind though is a few dabs of petroleum jelly added to the inside of your nostrils ( like they do at crime scenes or what coroners use ) but obviously this is adding another smell which defeats the object of your post.

This sounds great. Can you comfortably wear them all day? I never know when I'm going to encounter a migraine-inducing smell (and it happens instantly), so I'll need to wear them every second that I'm not in my house. I know I can read all about them online, but I'd rather get my information from someone who uses them and understands neurodiversity- not from an advertisement designed to make them sound useful and which doesn't take autistic people into account.

I haven't worn them all day because I'm a bit self conscious about them but I don't see why you couldn't. I can say that with them I cannot tell if a client is a smoker and I cannot tell if someone is wearing perfume. Autopsies, especially if the body is few days old (sorry to be graphic if you are sqeemish) are probably the worst smell I encounter, thankfully not often, and I can detect a small amount of odour but it doesn't get stuck in the back of my throat and make me want to gag and puke. :D My Husband who I work with, is impervious to smells. He can smell, he just doesn't see why I make such a fuss. He thinks I'm a sook. I can't really say if they will work for anyone else but they work for me :D
