Three of my paintings are being displayed at an exhibition 200 miles away and someone has kind of taken an interest in them. They emailed me. I was already invited to the exhibition's opening party but I declined. Now I'm invited to the closing party. I don't know whether to go. I'm hopeless at reading if people are genuine or not. Also I don't have that much money and the hotel would cost. If I go I'm going to be living on tinned food for the rest of the month. But maybe it's worth it. It could be my big shot. I don't know. Just thought I'd post in case anyone has any good advice.

If I were you, I would go. People know that artists frequently are "eccentric," so they tolerate "difference" more. You can also explain the process through which your art was created. Or maybe, if in a particularly expansive mood, state a "manifesto." Perhaps you could write out a "manifesto" to give out to people.

You can make good artistic friends through these "closings." You might even get good wine and cheese out of them--and, in rare cases, actual good food.

Thanks for the reply, I have a feeling you're right, artists are more open to different people.

Well, I've booked the hotel. Time will tell if it was wise or not...

I hope you get enough sales to offset the cost of the train trip and the hotel room.

How would you feel about sleeping in a hostel instead of a hotel? Obviously, sleeping in a hostel is not for everybody. It's much cheaper than a hotel room, though (especially in the UK).

Thanks kraftiekortie and as you say there may be good food. :) This is a bit embarrassing but I am getting my mother to take me! So it had to be a hotel. She isn't really the hostel type. I had to go with my mother because I don't drive yet and trains are too stressful for me.

It has cost a bit but I am really looking forward to it. Sometimes I suppose you have to give things a try. You can't live your whole life like a miser. And I'm glad I'm going to be there. :)

Could your mother help you out a little bit with the groceries?

Yeah, she's said that she will cover the costs for my food as long as I eat in so it should be okay.
