This is a call to delete the word "Aspie" from existence. I can only see bad things coming from this. It also sounds gay. I use the word gay in the neo-post-modern sense (cheesy and overenthusiastic).

I don't like "Aspie" either. Where did it come from anyway? I just try to avoid using it. I only use "gay" to describe something that is lame or ret*d. So, yeah, I guess you could say that "Aspie" is gay.

Personally I've heard one person use that word. Besides, well, sites like this.

So I'll jump on the bandwagon too.

If "Aspie" ever becomes accepted by mainstream society, the term will become derogatory.

I don't like Aspiestar either.

It's a stupid word and reminds me of people trying to patronise peole with AS.

I sometimes use it because it is handy (less typing) but I have never particularly liked it.

Liane Willey claims to have coined the term and has posted an "apology" on a Delphi forum a while back (ca. 1 1/2 years) although some people responded saying they had seen it used way before she did.

maybe. But I think some smart NT will pick on it and pronounce it

a** pie (like 3.14)

I live in dread of that day.

I have no problems with it, use it myself and find it more convenient than struggling with "person with aspergers/asperger's person/person who happens to have asperger's/autistic spectrum person/person who exhibits autistic spectrum tendancies" and so on. 'Aspie' doesn't tie you down to some over-rigid definition and rolls off the tongue (or keyboard) easily.

Wasn't the word GAY a nice word back in the day (1940?)?
In old movies and songs I hear it all the time, instead of FUN.

But if we can't use the word ASPIE, what word are we supposed to use? I am in a desperate need of a word, or I was until I found the word ASPIE on this site. In Norway they call us ASPERGERS (plural) or ASPER (singular)

I don't like any of the words, so then I will just use the term WIERD maybe..............................

At first when I heard about Tony Attwood's "affectionate nickname" for children diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, I didn't like it too much. Aspie sounded too, well, affectionate. I've started to use it though because "people with Asperger's syndrome" is too much to type, write, or say.

Other nicknames I've heard for people with Asperger's syndrome are no better: Aspergians and, worst of all, Aspergonauts! I almost think I'd rather be called an /'&s`b@rg@r/ (Kirshenbaum, <http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Evan_Kirshenbaum/IPA/faq.html>) ("assburger").

I have no problem whatsoever with the term aspie.
