I didn't know whether this was an "autistic" thing or maybe just a "human" thing, but I was wondering if anyone else does this. Basically, whenever I read a word that I like, I repeat it over and over to myself because I like the sound of it. Is this echolalia? I do have other echolaliac behaviors as well. Does anyone else do this, or is it just me? :D

I'm embarrassed to say that I do. I like to repeat or think about something Denis Istomin said in his interviews, because he's very inspiring to me. There was a video of an interview he did for Uzbekistan television. It has been taken off the Internet. I was very disappointed, because that was one of my favorite interviews he ever did. I wrote some of it down and saved it.

I don't think most humans repeat words in their heads over and over again. I have only heard and read autistic people do it and yes, it is echolalia.

I repeat so many words in my head a lot. Name a few Super smash bros Wii U Ike when he says "Aether", Ike again when he says "prepare yourself!", Yggdra Union when Gulcasa uses genocide and says "ARE YOU READY!! !"...basically you get the point! :)

Oh by the way "Aether!" "Aether!" "Great Aether!! !"(actually that's another one I repeat!) :D

Wait. Repeating words in your head, and not just out lout, is echoalia? I struggle with this. I thought it was what they called "intrusive thoughts".

Too often. Just not noticeable or problematic -- like my sensory issues, it's a 'symptom' I could 'afford' having.

Done it consciously and unconsciously, verbally and non verbally. Usually because I like to.
Not just phrases and words that is pronounced physically or mentally, spoken or written, it could apply to songs, sounds, and music.. Images, too, of course, whether it's animated or inanimate.
Also, it could be from memory and I could sort of modify/alter it (which is either a good or a bad thing, depends if you know what you're doing), or completely made up that isn't based on memory -- and distinguish it as a made up and not real.

Not just sounds, words, or things I've seen or heard. I could even consciously or semi consciously replay or relive certain experiences, sensations, and emotions too from memory.

I'm not quite sure. I meant that I repeated them out loud, but I also repeat them in my head sometimes, too. Everybody has intrusive thoughts, but a thought is only considered intrusive if it is ego-dystonic (unwanted and resisted). It could be an ASD trait to repeat things in your head if it is ego-syntonic. :D

Thanks for replying! I love repeating things from video games, especially from my favorite YouTubers :D .

Wow, I don't think I've ever replayed emotions or experiences semi-consciously before! That sounds pretty cool :D .

I will sometimes repeat over and over some posts I have read here but it is usually delayed and happens before I go to sleep but I don't think that's what your on about.

I will repeat words , sounds , animal noises out loud especially if I find them funny but repeating it once or twice is usually enough to get it out of my system. Some catchphrases I have seen on TV have stayed with me for years and occasionally get triggered into in my head and I try to use them in everyday conversation.

That's echolalia in my book :D .

I suspect I may have a mild case of echolalia , I didn't even know it was thing until I joined here and was not really aware I did it.

I'm still trying to figure a lot of stuff out. I was just reading something that said it might be perseverance? Anyone know anything about it?

Echolalia is an involuntary or almost involuntary echo of what somebody said.

That was what I had read about it, but Edna3362 mentioned words or phrases repeated mentally so I wondered if there was more to it. On further reading it seems more like perseverance or rumination? I get words or phrases stuck in my head. They aren't negative or bad. It's just like my thoughts get stuck in a loop sometimes. I didn't mean to jack the thread. It just raised my curiosity. I can take it up in another thread.

Sometimes I do end up echoing -- as in, echolalia: involuntary, verbal, and repetitive, echoed literally from words heard from somewhere, for no reason.

When done voluntarily: Usually because of my short term memory and I can't exactly trust my auditory processing and short term memory.

Then various versions of voluntary/involuntary, verbal/nonverbal, outwardly expressed/inwardly expressed, associated/unassociated with memory, whether it was from me or someone else, recalled repetitively.

I don't bring this up much because it wasn't a problem in my case. :| And I barely find words for it.
I could 'isolate' it like it's a separate task from my mind instead that it itself is 'all/almost' or 'only' like it's an intrusive like focus that keeps coming back and invade my thoughts.
Kinda how my thoughts in special interests do not meddle with my present thoughts or functioning, how I handle mental shifting or changes.
