If anyone "rocks", I'm curious in what way. Under extremely stressful circumstances sometimes take an upright knees tucked to my chin position and ... well ... rock maybe? It was pointed out to me recently and I've started paying more attention now and realized that any time I'm in a chair that will rock, like my work chair, I will rock in it more often than not. I also find myself gently swaying in some way just out of comfort like if I'm sitting cross legged I put my elbows on my knees and use lean my weight forward and let me legs push me back to create a rhythmic motion. It's a gentle thing. But when I look at videos of kids with autism rocking it looks more - well maybe it's not the best word but - violent? Are these things rocking? What about swinging on swings?

I rock as well; it's very calming. As for the more violent rocking, the kids might be experiencing a strong emotion or more input in that situation. Maybe they have worse sensory issues? Swinging on swings is another way to gain vestibular input. I sway when I'm more relaxed but just happy or something, and I rock more violently when I get upset. Autistic people rock! (Sorry, I had to :D ).

I don't know but I think most people sub-conciously rock. But in a more subtle way. I love swinging on swings.
Like it doesn't have to be 'voilent' It can be subtle.

I can't say I've ever rocked that I can recall, but I've got other things that I do.

I'm constantly rubbing my eyebrows, I blow air into the elbow of my shirt, and I've been struggling to stop biting my nails for years.

When trying to stop biting my nails, I find that I instead scrape my teeth against the underside of my nail, which gradually irritates it until I do eventually bite it off (unless I cut it off very short first)

The only time I've ever rocked regularly was because of side effects from antipsychotic drugs and a few times when I've been under huge amounts of stress ( only when I was by myself )

I rock a lot of the time. I do it to calm down when I'm anxious or upset and when I'm really excited in a positive way. I do it both sitting in a chair and while standing up.

I rock when I listen to my music. I do it in a gentle sort of way to the beat.

I rock pretty much constantly when sitting - unless I'm engaged in a focused task, like using the computer, drawing, writing, etc. I've worn out many rocking chairs over the years, but I do it, even in a chair that doesn't rock.

When standing in a que, I tend to rock back and forth on the balls and heels of my feet, sometimes while simultaneously hand-flapping with my key ring.

But mostly, if I'm standing, I have my hands in my front pockets, and sway side-to-side, in an elliptical motion, like Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles, except I'm not blind, just anxiety-ridden. :bounce: :shaking: :bounce:

I was told off too many times to mention in school about rocking on a chair that doesn't rock

I used to rock a lot when I was younger. Not much anymore, only if I was in a rocking chair. Most of the time I just shake my legs when I need it for thinking or when I'm nervous.

When i was younger I used to rock, I like spinning on my chair sometimes too.
I used to get told "Don't Rock" sometimes I didn't know I was doing it.

That's what happened to my brother. He used to rock, but he got told off for doing so, so now he has other stims.

Is your brother diagnosed with autism?

I really, really like rocking chairs.

I also rock when the chair is not a "rocking chair." I don't recall ever falling off, though.

I've been told off for doing that.

Nope! I don't think my parents noticed anything in any of us.

I love rocking chairs, though I also rock when the chair is not a rocking chair. Every day I get really stressed and overwhelmed from going to school, so I come home and rock in a rocking chair and pace for hours. It's quite calming :D .

Is he in the "orchestra," too?

Is he much older than you? Do you get along well?
