What is "posturing?"

In the extended version of the DSM-5 criteria, it mentions full-body posturing as a stim (self-stimulatory behaviour). This can be found here: https://depts.washington.edu/dbpeds/Scr ... eb2013.pdf .

What on earth is full-body posturing? Any answers are appreciated !

Huh, I have never heard if it, only of odd body postures which I have always assumed meant sitting wrong or sitting poorly or standing wrong, etc. and kids and adults have always made comments about how I sat or walked or stood. Like being told to sit up straight, my mom telling me how to stand and the correct standing felt uncomfortable and I always looked odd in the home movies and it was because of my body posture.

Usually, "posturing" means you try too hard to present a false face to people.

In the case of the DSM-V, though, I believe it means "unusual" posturing for any reason. Posturing which deviates obviously from the "norm." It could be said to be quite subjective. One clinician might not think a person's posturing is unusual enough; others might think otherwise.

Well, sometimes I get into a certain position, tighten the muscles to maintain that position, and just stay like that for a while. Sometimes it's just a part of my body, like a hand or a foot, and sometimes it's more generalised. When I first came across the term, I just assumed that's what they meant by posturing.

The first guy looks more depressed than autistic. I find many autistic/Aspie people tend to look "tense" in their posture. I had to work at mine.

The second guy looks more the part. Notice his "tenseness,"

He looks like he has "ants in his pants"---like maybe he's adjusting his underwear or something.

The main thing was that I got less tense in my life.

And I cared less what people thought of me.

I also got scared of being a hunchback.
