I've been reading Cynthia Kim's Nerdy, Shy, and Socially Inappropriate book over the last few days and I came to the bit about sensory seeking.

She mentions loving the sense of speed of fair ground rides and that made me wonder about my love of driving fairly quickly on country roads - seeking out a sense of speed.

Then I had a thought - years ago now I used to enjoy Carp Fishing. It is a quiet hobby - outdoors, peaceful, nobody bothers you etc etc.

But then when you get a big fish on the line - maybe a fish that is over 30-45cm (12-18") long and weighing up to 9kg (20lbs) - it doesn't half pull back. Playing a big fish is a very strange ...um... sensation.

Make you wonder, eh..... 8O

I'm looking forward to playing table tennis and badminton at my school once classes start at the end of next month just for the rapid pace of playing.

I read her book to, and found the sections on sensory seeking really useful. It made me realize that my love of hanging upside down and have jumping off of things when I was little was probably just that.

I could see possibly the sensation of catching a giant fish as being related :)

I have no experience of fishing but I have always loved the motion sensations of fair ground rides and yes, cars. I love to drive --- I didn't always drive all that fast but still the motion, at whatever speed, was pleasing to me.

As a child I always used to smell books I was reading, I think that could have been kind of a sensory seeking thing.

I also tend to kind of crumple and fidget with the page I am not reading I still do that to this day, I usually don't even realize it till I have been doing it for a while or someone points it out but that may be more of a stimming thing than sensory seeking.

^^^^ I still sniff books!! !

It's one of the things I love about reading, aside from the actual reading of the contents, lol! Seriously, I adore the smell of books and I will every so often lift it up to my nose and take a sniff. When I read in public I suppress that, but it feels like I'm missing out on part of what I enjoy.

When I was a child I used to repeatedly rub the edge of the pages while I read; this seems to have been a sensory stimming behavior. I no longer do that but I still do the smelling.

Yes, magazines too!

I also really like the feel of holding them in my hands, books too. I like to feel the paper of the page warm up under my thumbs.

It's one of the reasons why I don't care for e-books or online versions of magazines -- I like the tactile and the smelling factor of them too much!

My model trains are my sensory hobby, espically the one that runs on real steam. There is order, trains travel in a line in an orderly fashion. There are sounds, and in model form, they are easy for me to enjoy, where as when out trainspotting, I need my ear muffs most of the time due to the noise level. I espically love steam locomotives. Much more to be seen and enjoyed, along with the damp smell of the steam, the smell of hot oil. The sounds the boiler makes. With my model, I get all of this as seeing a steam locomotive in real life is not that common here in the USA anymore. There is also the village that goes along with a model train set. A world I can loose myself in for hours, its a very safe place, everything there is at my sound volume, the daylight is subdued and everybody knows not to touch me. Dodger.
