Re: Did You Pass This Test in Starkid's Post
I posted a video test in Starkid's post titled "Do you think you could pass this test?"
Go and do the test before you read the comments here if you don't want to influence the test.
I did the test and did not hear what the instructor asked at the end of the test , did anyone else hear it or not.
I have no idea what this test proves but it was interesting anyway. I would of guessed I would of heard it as clear as day but apparently not.

I think you should edit your original post in this thread to add the video itself so that people don't have to go find it in the other thread.
In any case, I didn't hear the man saying "I'm a gorilla", which presumably means I failed the test.

I don't think it's a fail , There is a comment on youtube that says this "Humans process language more strongly on one side of the brain than the other. About 90% of people favor their left brain for language processing, but the left brain hears the sounds from the right ear, the side where the women were talking. People that process language with their right brain are more likely to hear the man say he's a gorilla because they can hear language on that side more easily."

I didn't hear the bloke saying "I'm a gorilla" either, but the instructions told be to listen to the women, so for that reason alone I don't think I failed. Once the trick had been revealed, I played it again and listened for the gorilla man, and there he was. I noticed that the volume of his voice wasn't any higher than the voices of the other men, he didn't speak particularly clearly, and the male voices occupied the same frequency band in the audio spectrum. All in all, I wasn't all that surprised that the gorilla man wasn't easy to notice, I think the surprise factor is kind of illusory, it's something to do with the fact that if a real gorilla was with the observer in a real room, it'd be very surprising if the observer didn't notice. Clearly I hadn't turned the sound "I'm a gorilla" into thoughts. It also didn't surprise me because my hyperfocus is often so intense that I could almost ignore a real gorilla.
I think I did quite well in focussing on what the women were saying. I got that they were collaborating on acquiring a present and wrapping it, there was something about where the acquirer had parked, the colour had to be the second choice (blue not red), and they were using scissors to cut the (silver) paper. But that's after listening twice, I don't think I could have recalled quite that much detail after one listen. The women's voices occupied a different frequency band to the men's, and the women's voices were mostly fed to my right ear while the men's were fed mostly to my left ear, which I think helped me to screen out the unwanted male voices. And I did the test in the comfort of my own home, at a time I chose myself, without pressure, to the "partygoers" I was an unnoticed fly on the wall, so I was pretty relaxed. If I'd been actually at the party (I guess it was a party), then I wouldn't have found it so easy, the stereo separation would have been worse I think, and I'd have been more anxious and open to visual and physical distractions, though the fact that the women were doing something practical might have helped. I suppose there might have been some pressure to associate more with the men, being male myself, but it depends on the people I guess. All in all, I don't think I'll abandon my tendency to avoid parties on the strength of the test result.
