This post is quite different from my usual, although I do not really have a usual. Instead, this post will be more....ephemeral? Subjective, maybe. But warranted nonetheless. I know, being HFA, as do many (most) of us, I/we often feel/seem 'far away,' you do know what I mean, yes? I do not need to elaborate for you. That 'invisible barrier' between the autistic realm and the NT, or 'real world.' No words to articulate, but you know.

I am certain there are just a few very neurotypical individuals with the unique quality to be an 'autistic whisperer.' By this I mean these special NT individuals somehow intuitively know how to penetrate, and bridge that disparity. For instance, I have read many posts by Smelena, our NT member on Wrong Planet. She is an autistic whisperer. Another who fits this unique description is Dr. Tony Attwood. I've read, and watched, Dr. Attwood with autistic individuals and he DOES connect, yet maintain his NT integrity. How, or why, I do not know and this is not quantifiable.

I have met maybe just a rare few of these autistic whisperers in my life. Have you? Do you believe? These NTs are NOT necessarily medical practitioners - they can be anyone. I think, in other capacities, these people could be classified as 'sensitives.' Do you understand my words, Aspies/Auties? Have you met one? What is this quality?

Please, sincere thoughts. I am curious! So many NTs just 'don't get it,' or worse.

Disclaimer: There may well be other NTs on Wrong Planet who also fit this description, but I do not know. Smelena fits, which is why I mention her. Sorry if I missed another!

Strange question.....please consider though. Unsure where to post this too.

I haven't met a so called "Autism Whisperer". Although I have heard of a few people that have been said to be one. Example: Jim Carrey. Although, I'm not 100% sure that it's true.

I'd be willing to bet that Jim Carrey is, er... "one of us", i.e. on the spectrum.

I think that this is quite as possible as an autist who qualifies as an "NT whisperer," which is to say that I would not refute that some people, whether or not "on the spectrum," are simply wonderfully perceptive. However, I wouldn't say that this differs especially from other variations in human thinking patterns.

I would have said Tony Attwood too. I heard him speak a few years ago and he was awesome with the education professionals too. Maybe its just a general understanding of people that extends to autistics.

There have been teachers I would put in that category too.

Anyone who is accepting of our nuances and allows us to interact with them how we interact, rather than deride us, shun us, expel us, and/or immediately assume the worst when we behave "odd" and/or say something that's deemed socially inappropriate, but in reality our intentions aren't ill mannered or directed.

I call them "nice people", your mileage may vary.

My uncle is. He is the only one who really understands me, what I try to say, and how to help me. He is NT, yet is great with me.. Unlike the orignal poster im not HFA im in the middle of the spectrum not low but not high, i lay somewere in the middle. He was the first one to really talk to me on my level. He is great at helping me through meltdowns, and the only one i can let me touch me. Doesn't really bother him if i want to rock or stim out, and doesnt try and want me to be "cured". Im free with him to live like myself. :D

The secretaries where I work are nice for the most part. But they treat all of us at work like we are a little slow, or ret*d. They don't understand most of what my coworkers and I say or do, but they know they have to be nice because they work for us.
Nice? Probably not.
Whisperer? Definitely not.

I believe there is such a thing. Maybe I am an autistic whisperer??

I think they would accept autism and how it can affect some people. They would remain calm when a meltdown occurs. They wouldn't mind the flapping or humming or things being lined up. They would redirect when self harm occurs and try to find out why is was happening. They would not laugh at the person on the spectrum or criticise them.
They would try to empower the autistic person to be the best they can.
Well I do all of that!
So what that Damo walks on his toes. So what that he hums all the way home from school, or the trip takes a bit longer because he saw a bus.
Ok some things feel a bit tedious and boring to me but because they are so important to him, I don't mind!! !

I think I see. That, and, autistic whisperers, like you, are not afraid of the unknown. Willing to explore/learn, maybe.

I LOVE a challenge!! ! I am open-minded and willing to learn. I have extreme tolerance and patience.
I am also NOT perfect. Sure there are days where I just want to walk out but I can't. I have to take a step back and be happy my child is healthy, loved and I think happy.

My Dad told me that 50 years ago or even sooner, autistic kids were thrown into insistutions (sp?) I really felt like crying, some kids never got a chance

I think you would love to read Temple Grandin! She's written several books, maybe check out Thinking in Pictures.

She's a HFA and born in ~ 1945/6 when autistic children were institutionalized! Scary. She narrowly escaped this fate, even once deemed 'brain damaged!' Also, until about 1950ish autistics were classified as schizophrenic - maybe just for convenience. Thank you Dr. Asperger and Dr. Kanner (& others).

Dr. Temple Grandin is now a renowned animal scientist, revolutionalized animal handling techniques Internationally, etc. PLUS - an outstanding researcher in the field of autism. Her novel writings REVISED what everyone from professionals to parents to 'laypersons' thought about the autistic mind. She's friend's with Dr. Attwood too.

In actuality, by definitive diagnosis, often forensically, many (not just a few) scientists and artists are/were autistics. For ex: Einstein (you knew this, I'm sure), who had real development difficulites, etc, Nikola Tesla, Grisha Perelman (PhD in mathematics and fairly recently solved the Poincare conjecture), Glenn Gould, Kandinksy, more, more. Oh, Bill Gates (Asperger's Syndrome, stims overtly in public).
I sometimes wish NTs would consider this before judging the autistic realm.

I think people like Mum2ASDboy and Smelena(sp?) just love their kids, see the good, and have the intelligence to check things out. It is too easy to assume that someone acting odd is mentally deficient. It is like the idea of talking to yourself. In the 60s-80s it was looked at as indicative of mental problems. TODAY, people are more likely to assume you have a cell phone.

See if there were only more nts like you, this world would be a better place! Acceptance is a such a hard thing to find these days :? .
