I only just found out about this. Come to think of it there is a lot of this that goes on. People may make innocent errors of judgement based on misunderstanding someone's "mixed message" doubled binding communication.

Yep....I've experienced the "double bind" throughout my life.

I always seem to give either too much, or too little, ice cream to my wife.

Seriously, I've experienced this in many other contexts.

I've found that, looking back at situations in my life, these sort of things have happened to me all the time.

It seems, because I was easy to fool, i.e. gullible, "friends" would say something which sounded nice, but would prompt snickering and giggles from the people around me. Obviously, I wasn't able to recognise the double bind statement because I couldn't decipher subtleties of the situation.
I've been under the impression that this type of person was just being passive-aggressive, but this double bind thing is intriguing.

In my wisdom, I believe I've become quite good at catching these things these days, although, I have no real way of qualifying this. Maybe I don't get caught out as much now simply because I don't really socialise with humans these days? lol

I almost hear my mother saying "of course I've forgiven you but..." and then grinding her teeth
