Has anyone on here found yoga to help with focusing, and stress and anxiety? I don't know if I should pay for sessions or not

Simple answer - Yes!

Any kind of concentration/meditation type of learning can only help the person.

Center the body (yoga) and the mind will center as well.

Center the mind and the body will center as well.

Do both together and balance comes quickly!

I can only answer from a NT perspective.

I suffered major depression/anxiety for a few years (I'm great now!)

I found yoga EXTREMELY helpful! But like anything, it takes practice and you'll get better with time.

Relaxation is a life skill that needs to be learned and practiced. *Stand on soap box* Relaxation and yoga should be part of the curriculum of preschools and schools. *Off soapbox*

As a physiotherapist, yoga is fantastic for correct muscle balance around the joints thus preventing or treating joint aches and pains.

I work as a respiratory physio currently and teach many of the yoga breathing techniques to my patients.

In fact, a lot of the physio exercises have been 'stolen' from yoga and given a fancy name!

just punch something dude to relieve stress, how can moving slowly do anything for you? exercise is very cool! but not when its slow

I do Taekwondo too and it is extremely therapeutic kicking and punching (the punchbag, not another person!)

Yoga is great. I personally use it solely for the stretching (increased flexibility makes kicking easier for me, and trying to lock me harder for my opponents) but it is also very relaxing.

Though, I'd recommend a good dvd over a class - more privacy, more control, less social anxiety and just as many benefits.

The only times I'd recommend a class in Yoga is if either a) you're having serious difficulty figuring out how a position is supposed to work, or b) if you're getting really good at it, and wish to pursue it as a serious interest.

Bear in mind, for relaxation purposes the traditional style of yoga is best. For fitness, power yoga is best.

And RichardBenson, try looking into a person called Duncan Wong. Yoga can be very cool, and there's one heck of a lot of slow moving exercises that are good for you. Even a good cardio workout is possible whilst barely moving, if you know what you're doing.

I was told yoga could help strength-building. So I bought a couple of DVDs on the subject. I found it to be extremely boring.

(That, and one of the DVDs was taught by a guy who's mannerisms could only be described as "flaming affected San Franciscan." I'm not homophobic, but this guy was so "out there" with it, lisp and everything, that I just couldn't take the DVD seriously.)

Yoga doesnt build much in the way of strength. Power Yoga does a bit, bit it's still not even close to it's primary focus. What kind of strength-building were you looking for?

I like to think I know a bit on subjects like this, so I might be able to point you in the right direction.

totally......

but like anything.... there are many kinds of yoga... so maybe try out a few places before joining

it's awesome though.... some terms i get up at 6:30am just to make the early yoga class.... then i take a nap afterwards for an hour = HEAVEN

:P
