I think it's absurd and a bit cold, and I'm immediately put off. Whoever uses it for me automatically loses respect from me.

Personally, I think it just shows a lack of imagination, if you are going to insult someone then at least do it well.

I think the same about people who use gay as an insult; try to lengthen your vocabulary at least, and be more inventive with insults.

Not that I condone attacking behaviours, but if you're going to insult people anyway, then at least do it right. Otherwise it's just plain lazy.

Frequently, I have found that profanity is a poor replacement for more substantive vocabulary--especially when used repetitiously.

Though there are people who can use profanity creatively.

Personally, I'd rather leave profanity out of most conversations.

I was never called "autistic." I was called "ret*d" all the time.

I think it's kind of funny.
I've been called an autistic um.. not sure if I'm allowed to say it here but it's usually a slur for gay man.
All I could was think "little do you know..." Haha.

Autism wasn't really known in my HS days. I got called "space cadet," "moon unit," "ET" and such.

When it comes to this I always think about how genius is used as an insult.

Someone does something wrong and someone else says to them, "way to go genius".

Or if they think someone is stupid, they call them "Eisenstein".

They tend to be sadistic bullies.

It just goes to show you what most NTs think of us Autistics. Because many of us are both gifted and disabled at the same time many NTs will use that to insult us by saying we are both stupid and too smart for our own good. Sometimes the ignorance is both breathtaking and incredibly aggravating to the extreme.

But I suspect that most NTs already know that ASDs are simply a very different type of human being and difference will always spawn fear, hatred and anger unfortunately. The number of times I've been bullied for being different is staggering and has taken a very detrimental emotional toll on me.

I think it's disgusting and I think you'll find that the people who use it in this manner are severely uneducated on Autism.
It makes me annoyed.

Hi:

Those who use the term as an insult are taking an accepted medical term and using it as an insult (this has happened with terms in the past like ret*d) which was a legitimate medical term but is now seen as insulting when all ret*d means is “slowed down” (example the fire “retardant” meaning something (usually a chemical agent) that slows down the progression of a fire)

Just my thoughts. Glad you posted this.

I'm a little irritated but otherwise I don't care and I can't stop them all. Them using it is dumb on it's own, but they aren't hurting anyone physically. If they tell it to you and you're a neurotypical, then it's simply not true. If they tell it to you and you DO have autism, then it's true and that's not changeable.

I love that thought. You’re good!

I think it shows a great lack of imagination. I also think those people have been watching too many Autism Speaks commercials.

LOLz. “Watching too many Autism Speaks commercials”. I’ve done my research and formed my opinion and I laugh at the Autism Speaks organization because it is doing more harm than good.
