Hey guys. Do any of you have a good response when someone you need to work with asserts that you're too analytical and should think differently than you do? My sponsor in AA implied as much last night and it really bothered me. I can't just switch to a new sponsor because I switch all the time and need to just stick with it. Plus for the most part we get along really well, so I think this is just growing pains. So I'm for sure not looking for people to say "just find someone new."

A little more context:
I'm ambitious and want to become more and more socially adept, so that, when I graduate from my academic program, I can have a fruitful career. This implication that I'm "too analytical" is not new to me. People have said it my whole life. I think it's a good idea for me to develop some good responses when that attitude comes up.

Thanks!

I'm curious what suggestions they would give. What is the alternative?

Why do you need to "respond" to it?

Why not either just go along with what they say, or pretend to go along with what they say?

You haven't given examples so none of us really knows what your talking about. But I can imagine in a general way how autistics tend to be overly analytical and how it interferes with life. If your approach doesn't work, then it doesn't work. Whats the point of defending it? If you cant stop being analyitic then use your analytical tendencies to craft a nonanalytical mask for the world that helps you fit in. Ya gotta do what gotta do to survive.

I tried that too. Never succeeded much, as other guys can and will plot against you (and it doesn't really matter much how well you're doing your work).
Good luck, anyway.

PS as to the answer to your question: I couldn't find any good answer to that. Reasoning doesn't work well with NTs.

I tell them "I am an engineer, so I am naturally analytical. Deal with it."

Ok, let me put it in a different way: NTs will blame you for being arrogant and will use it against you.

Just keep it to yourself, and when you get results, accept your status as Wizard. Most people can't follow your logic, so it just gets boring and they start to wonder if you are right, or just getting carried away.
Upon learning of the death of another courtier, Machiavelli mused "I wonder what he meant by that?"

I'm always too something. My response is "it's better than having anxiety".

Hmm. I wonder if "and you're too judgmental" could work.
But they will probably think that you're trolling them and get angry.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Isn't it a compliment or do they mean it as criticism? If they mean it as criticism, tell them "What's wrong with that?"

As much as I understand NT thinking, this is harsh criticism.

I like this one. However, I think that it will be considered trolling or backchatting, again.

Thank you for your "pre-deleted" comment! I did see it and I liked it...
I don't know the context of the original statement, but in the post it seemed rude. I am only rude that way to people who know me. I am a little more polite to strangers, but the message remains the same.

That's kind of what I was thinking!! I was like "Well I didn't get into one of the best actuarial science program in the world because of my amazing 'broad strokes' skills ... "

Thanks for totally getting where I'm coming from. If you feel like sending me good vibes for my C++ homework I would appreciate it ;-)

First: yes, harsh criticism. I appreciate that you understand this. League girl's comment was surely meant in a friendly way but I really don't want to have to explain why this is bothersome to me right now! So thanks for speaking up on my behalf.

At one point as she was "teaching" me about how she, too, used to be too analytical because she was afraid I interrupted her to say, point blank, "But I'm not too analytical."

I'm not. I'm perfectly analytical. I'm brilliantly analytical. If she can't hang with it, it's her loss.

God I'm cranky.
