A bill has been proposed to aid Autistic drivers

Quote:
State Rep. Mack Butler (R - Rainbow City) on Tuesday encouraged legislative leaders to give swift passage to his bill that would provide drivers on the autism spectrum with the option of applying for a specialty license plate identifying their condition to law enforcement officers.

“A constituent whose son has been diagnosed with autism suggested this legislation as a way of easily notifying law enforcement officers that a driver is on the spectrum in case of traffic stops or other interactions,” Butler said. “I am in full support of law enforcement officers and their ability to carry out a difficult job in sometimes extreme conditions, but after seeing some troubling video of an encounter in which officers were unaware that the person they stopped was autistic, it is obvious this legislation is much needed.”

Under the provisions of HB495, a driver with a valid autism spectrum disorder card could apply for and purchase a special “Person With Autism” license plate for their vehicle, which would readily identify the individual to law enforcement.

Purchase of the autism tag would be completely voluntary and in no way mandatory for drivers who are diagnosed on the spectrum

I would have to think twice before volunteering that information. While the more autistics that come out the better I would wonder about being targeted and not just by cops. Drunk guys in cars be real asses sometimes. A number of times I have had full beer bottles thrown at me while walking.

I wouldn't want my "invisible disability" made so obviously visible.
It would feel like walking around with a sign on one's back.

No, I don't wish to advertise that fact. It took me so long to get a driver's license (first time licensed at 48), almost lost it last year and worked hard to get it back. I was lucky to get a license for the first time and even more fortunate to get it back. I don't wish to jeopardize my future again.

If it was free yes

But instead of license plate, maybe it could be a marker on a driver's license

That way it is not as public, that you are autistic

And you might drive different cars

No, people with autism will never see any money from these plates. The state will spend it on themselves like always.

License plate? No, not a chance. I would be concerned about my tires being slashed or my car being egged. But I would welcome an official diagnosis card that I could pull out for times when I can't speak.

I wouldn't put a special "autistic" sticker on my license plate.

Unless----one gains access to the "handicapped" parking areas.

I don't even have a car so there would be no point. And even if I did, I'd probably get the "You don't look/sound/act autistic" garbage from many drivers. I've heard people who have other disabilities get all kinds of abuse just for parking in handicapped places just because they're not in a wheelchair. They can walk but have to park close to a building because they have difficulty walking or get tired too easily. :(

That's overkill. I wouldn't want it. I can't imagine it would come useful too many times if police officers have enough common sense. If anyone's worried they can always get one of those medic alert bracelet showing their conditions. What's next? A license plate for the colorblind? So they don't have to explain why they ran the red light?

Not me, no way, even if I wasn't in the closet. Just another excuse for idiot drivers to drive even more idiotically around me.

I've been pulled over a few times, and there were no problems. I didn't even get a ticket =)

I agree. It would be good for police officers to know I'm autistic, but I wouldn't want it announced to everyone. Something on a driver's license sounds like a better idea to me. I'm planning on printing out a little card to hand to people saying that I'm autistic and giving a bit of information about that, for use in situations like this. I can't drive, but it would still probably be very helpful in emergency situations.

Dragons and demons

Nine years ago, a police officer pulled me over and gave me a ticket for seat belt violation

He asked me "how come you're looking at me weird"

"I am autistic and have no control over facial expressions"

"Sorry about that"

If I were not to have disclosed, then I do not want to know what would have occurred

(Although I have  some  control over facial expressions)

More than one driver could drive one car

One driver could driveore than one car, at different times

Hence it sounds like it makes more and to put the  autistic  designation sign on a driver's license, instead of on the license plate

And the DMV could provide, some educational documents for professionals

Sometimes someone asks for a driver's license as a form of ID

When I was a pedestrian, a cop had the nerve to stop my worthless corpse

He told me that at Denny's restaurant, someone made a report, that a defendant allegedly did something that justified 911 intervention

The defendant had a hood and a backpack and so did I

Since nobody in the solar system has a hood or a backpack, I must have been the defendant

The cop told me to give him a driver's license

But I was not driving
