Hi,

I wanted to know, is there a link between AS/ASD and being physically weak? I have been the absolute physically weakest person I have ever come across in life. I am PATHETICALLY weak. It's one of the reasons I could never defend myself against my bullies.

I've read that this is a common occurence in people with AS/ASD somewhere. Both my brother and my father are like this as well though so I suspect it's genetic.

Thanks for all replies.

It's probably more genetic and/or possibly linked to other illnesses. In part, it could be caused by ASD. Many people on the spectrum tend to isolate their self inside and not do anything physical. Plenty of of people with ASD are physically strong and for most, it probably has to do with how physically active they are through out the day or if they put some time into a exercise routine. The same could be said for neurotypicals.

Clumsiness and autism are linked.

Weakness and autism have little to do with each other.

There are many physically strong autistic people and Aspergians.

I'm 6 2 and weight 240 lbs. I'm pretty strong. I don't think there's a correlation. There's a rumor going around about a tie between Asperger's and social issues, but I haven't been able to find any information on that anywhere yet.

Was that supposed to be a joke of some kind? Microaggressions or what?

I’m 5 foot 5 and not all that “physically strong.”

I seek to compensate in other ways, rather than lament any physical “weakness.”

I experience microaggressions on a regular basis. You have to adjust to them. Lamenting about them serves little purpose.

Short people make me uncomfortable, with how they are naturally built to be sneaky. Bro date is off

Many Asperger are not keen on sports, this could explain they would be weaker in average.

I'm into sports, and I've always had plenty of lean muscle but I don't consider myself very strong.
My frame is too slight to be strong.
And my joints seem defective.

I feel physically weak ALOT, specially in the summer, I feel like the very hot weather drain the life of me or my body feel so numb. I also have Cerebral Pasly, I was born with weak muscles, I did not walk until I was 3 years old. I can’t even swim or ride a bike. When I can, I walk more & try to exercise.

CP and autism definitely have a higher correlation than with NTs.

Yes, low muscle tone is a documented AS trait.

I used to be quite weak. I had symptoms of chronic fatigue and could barely hold tools standing on a ladder, I felt like I was going to drop them or fall off. That was 6 years ago or so.

Since then I've treated the digestive issues and, to the best of my knowledge, cleared my intestinal tract so well that I'm now able to absorb nutrients much better. I workout and work a physical job. I eat to maintain and build muscle. I'm 6'2" 202.5lbs approx 12.5% body fat and now count myself amongst the physically strongest people at work/in my social circle.

I don't have physical issues myself. Not even clumsiness, nor anything health wise.
If anything, it's as if I have several advantages on physical capabilities overall.
While I'm a skinny 5'4 and less than 50kg, I'm pretty strong for someone of my structure.

The physically weak trait is likely a health concern or a comorbidity for low muscle tone/weakness. Or a certain sensory issue concerning physical control of pressure/force that is more likely tied to autism regardless of physical state.

The latter seem to be my case. Except of receiving weaker physical force, I ended up with stronger physical force and stronger grip even at weakened state.
I ended up needing to hold back instead of exerting stamina to get enough force. Holding back still some requires effort to control. Yet holding back force is still 'easier' than exerting force still. :|
Otherwise, I'd be knocking doors too loud, breaking eggs while holding it on certain ways, or pressing buttons too hard that it'll sink or break.

Could simply be a combination of the two most basic factors that dictate human strength: Diet & exercise. If your diet isn't one that's rich in protein and your level of activity isn't conducive to building muscle mass, well then, you'll be weak.

I don't think it's all that common for autistics to be physically weak outside of lack of activity and exercise.

I myself am a mesomorph meaning I am naturally muscular and stong. You might be an ectomorph meaning you're naturally thin and frail or an endomorph meaning you're naturally flabby with little to no muscle tone.
