After noticing that a considerable portion of the people who post on the forums I frequent hail from The Land Down Under, I have to ask: how come Australia seems to have an unusually large amount of people on the Spectrum? I saw in another country that South Korea and the United States have greater rates, but Aussies appear to be more vocal. Does it have to do with increased acceptance?

https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/disabil ... nts/autism

3/4 of those diagnosed with autism are on a disability pension. This is a high level of support that may enable a lot of Aussies to get on the Internet.

I wonder if there is a genetic component? Most non-aboriginal Australians emigrated from England....Anyway, its something to ponder.

Quote:
83% of Australians with autism were aged under 25

I wish official government reports and people would stop conflating "having autism" with being diagnosed with autism.

It's never seemed to me to be higher than any other country.

NO. Australians hate anyone who is a little bit different.

Australia has rather good resources for getting a diagnosis relatively easily compared to some countries and free. We also have rather good protocols for recommending testing in early schooling.

The second quote is debatable. Aussies for the most part are open and accepting of many differences, yet strict on some specifics.

Heheheh!
Pity I live over the other side of Australia.

I met my husband (we're now separated) on WP. He lived in Victoria but moved here to the west. I also sometimes go to an adult autistics meeting in the city. There are a lot of autistics here.
