Or say, "let me tell you about my new kitten" "want to hear about the latest freeway video I watched?" How about, "my son is great at helping people?"
People say these other things to establish status.
Really want to be a wise acre? Tell them that everyone thinks their kids/grandkids are smart....hahaha
In some cases it might just be status.
In others, though, I think it more likely that they are just talking about something they are interested in and expect everyone else to be interested in it, too.
It's not at all unusual that someone who does X thinks that more other people do X. For example, gamblers will think that more people gamble than who really gamble. The same for people who drink. Or people who take drugs.
And those of us who don't do these probably underestimate the numbers who do them.
So it's not surprising that someone who likes cats will overestimate the number of people who like cats and those who dislike cats will underestimate the number of people who like cats.
