Having aspergers has been a interesting journey for me. It is rather mild in my case. However aspergers affects me mainly by causing me to become annoyed easily and sometimes a little impatient. One day I went to the Petsmart and saw the betta fish aisle instantly I started to feel more relaxed just watching swim around. I knew right then that I had to get one so I picked a purple female betta fish. My patience has been improved and when I watch her swim I feel so relaxed and at ease. Does anyone feel relaxation from their pets too?

I do as well but sadly I have no pets at this time. Due to circumstances unable to control it will be some time if ever. I connect with pets (especially dogs and cats) so much better then people... :?

Yes, I get relaxation from petting and cuddling with my cat. I also like watching our goats and chickens. I find watching fish relaxing, too, but I gave up trying to keep them alive and got rid of my aquarium.

I love aquariums - there's one at my doctor's office and I like to just sit there and watch the fish swim around. I'd love to get an aquarium but the wife is not keen.

We have a cat however and she's lots of fun. She's good therapy for me.

Dude, does it count, if the pet arthopods has appeared by itself? I know, that it's difficult to imagine, but it has realy happened. Long story short, I am the fish tank owner, where 4 fish live. My step-sister has brought me some small stones from the India, like present for me, which I have put into the aquarium for making it more beautiful and cozier. When 2 days past, I noticied the worm into the aquarium, that was hiden in the sand. Frankly speaking, I was very beatiful and didn't look, like the bad one. I got it from the aquarium and put it into the bottle of harm's way. Likely for me, I got it out in time, because it was the bobbit worm, that could eat all my fish. So, I'm lucky one, so you can check how is it beautiful on the https: and make sure about my words.

Pets are a big part of my life, and fish are great too.

Right now, I have a cat, and I love when she climbs in my lap. <3 I named her Marceline. She likes to be a little curl in my bed, right next to me, and she's curious about all the goings on in the house. There is a second cat, a Maine Coon I have named Siddartha. He's so gentle. :3

I talk a lot about my pets, and find ways to bring them into the conversation.

I also had a dog for a big chunk of my life, named Oliver who was important to me. He was very friendly and energetic, a Cocker Spaniel.

My service dog (a standard poodle named Merlin) does a good job of keeping me calmer and avoiding shutdowns and meltdowns (they still occasionally happen, but nowhere near as often as before I got him). My dad used to be very into keeping freshwater fish, and he let me and my brother each have a fishtank of our own. I love watching the rippling motion of the bottom fin on knife fish (I had a brown knife fish for a while - you have to be careful when getting them, because there are two kinds, one with a dorsal fin and one without, and the one that has the dorsal fin gets huge, while the one without stays a reasonable size for a standard home aquarium). I'm also a fan of eels and other eel- shaped fish. I had a peacock eel, but I didn't see much of it beyond its nose sticking up because they like to bury themselves in sand. I also like geophagus and had a couple of those. It's fun to watch them grab mouthfuls of sand and then filter it out through their gills. I had some kind of African cichlid, don't remember which, for a while, too. I think I had about six of them and was hoping they would breed because they are mouth brooders and I wanted to watch all the babies come pouring out of mama's mouth when she decided the coast was clear. My first fish were firemouth cichlids, but they didn't survive the move from New York to Kansas (my dad did have some that made it, though, if I remember correctly). Also had rainbow cichlids for quite a while, and probably several other species that I don't remember right now. However, I always feel sad when I see all the bettas in tiny containers because it's not much space and they don't look very happy in there. I want to get a nice big fishtank and put some bettas in it so they have plenty of space. Can't really put other fish in with them, though, because most will nibble at the betta's fins. Any time I'm somewhere that has an aquarium like the vet's office where I take my dog or a local Chinese restaurant that has two, I usually spend the whole time watching the fish. But at pet stores, I look to see what fish they have but also look at the other animals (particularly the reptiles).

I adopted an aquarium with two angelfish and one pleco about 5/6 months ago when their owner died. Watching them is very calming to my nerves, except when one harasses the other, then it makes my teeth grind.

I kept large aquaria with sororities of female betas, usually about 9 or 11 of them, for many years.

Most lived to be about three years old. Females can cohabitate in the right conditions without fighting.

I have also had many separate tanks for male betas (sometimes four or five separate male tanks at once).

My oldest male was Fincent Fin Gogh or "Finny", who lived to be four.

It's important to have a large tank with at least two gallons per fish, a heater, and a low speed filter.

They're incredibly calming especially with coloured lights, and I miss mine very much. :nemo: :nemo: :nemo:

I too have fish, both indoors and outdoors, from large koi to shebunkins, and had some Mexican fighting fish for awhile. It's so nice to wander through Aquatic centres and enjoy the huge variety of fish! Love it! My little zoo is very entertaining and very well loved :). The benefits are huge!

Loved the name of your fish, Is! Fincent Fin Gogh or "Finny"!

Just had to add this fish clip...

The Shedd Aquarium is my favorite place to go when we visit relatives in Chicago. I could probably spend a whole week straight (possibly even a month) without getting bored even once.

I had my own 20 gallon tropical aquarium growing up. There was a nice assortment of fish to watch and I would do it for hours, very relaxing. But.. the maintenance to keep the tank clean and keep fish healthy was a ton of work which is why I don't have an aquarium as an adult.

When I saw the title to this thread about Betas and autism, I thought it was about how a Beta fish doesn't get along with a mate so it needs to stay in its own bowl.. kind of like some autistic people. I need to stay in my own bowl sometimes as well.

I have a cat, Meow Meow, who has been in my life since I was 8 (I'm 21 at the moment.) I really do wish I had fish because I find them more relaxing and you can silently bond with them without getting meowed back at or scratched if they get annoyed from getting pet.
I used to have two Betta fish but they both passed away due to me having lack of knowledge of taking care of them. My parents do not want anymore animals in the house since we have 4 dogs and 2 cats along with 2 ducks and 14 baby chicks growing up in our garage till they are big enough to go out. AND around 10 or 9 chickens in our backyard that are getting old and passing away soon.
For now, i'll just stick with Meow Meow and the Chickens. Dogs are loud and I just prefer silence then barking.
:D
