The police knocked on my door and asked about the guy who lives across the road from me. I said I thought I'd last seen him about four days ago but it could be longer. They looked interested so I said had they spoken to his friends on the next street. Then I walked them round to where I could point to the house (about 20 yards) and the police said don't point just say discreetly in case of reprisals.

I feel so stupid, I know he's been in trouble occasionally with the police but he also has a lot of health problems due to being an alcoholic and drug user and we get ambulances outside his house quite often and I'd thought they were worried about him. I really didn't mean to dob him in; he's a twat, but definitely low key, and I like to get on with my neighbours. I hope I pointed out the wrong house, which is very possible.

I can't remember the first thing the policeman said but I thought it was something like 'we're worried about the guy at number 2. I'm sure they didn't say 'we're after the guy at number 2. When I went to point he clearly thought I was being stupid so he can't have believed he had misled me so :?

Someone is bound to have seen me walk them round, I don't know how the policeman can have thought it possible to be discrete when he's in a uniform (complete with the fluesant yellow body bits) :(

Nope. Not stupid. But maybe a little intimidated by the cops. Or maybe you truly thought the guy was in trouble.

I might have done the same thing, and thought as you do.

Most likely, nothing will result from this.

I hate myself when I feel I've done something that might be deemed stupid. I beat myself up about it and analyse the situation over and over again.

I've never really spoken to police so I wouldn't know if what you did was stupid or not. But I don't think it was stupid. Police have very strict rules and policies, so they probably correct people all the time and most people probably make little mistakes.

I wasn't intimidated but I wanted to help. It was a bit awkward to do so because I'd gone up to have a shower and so I had a perfect excuse but I thought I'd better help because I knew I'd feel really bad if the guy over he road was unconscious somewhere or beaten up (some of his friends are dodgy).

When someone asks for help I do feel a real pull to at least try.

I'd have done the same as you, I think, fluffysaurus. If the police were asking door-to-door about a neighbour, my first thought would be that someone's been reported missing, and I'd want to help. Unless you're personally involved in the matter, they're very unlikely to tell you what they're investigating anyway.

In any case, you didn't "dob" anyone in, because getting people in trouble wasn't your intent, no matter what the outcome. I've spent enough of my life ruminating about the world with my cynicism turned up to 11 to know where that leads; thinking the best of people in the first instance is an admirable trait, and I wish I found it easier.

Thanks guys, you've reassured me.

So far nothing else has happened, and nobody has been near his house, which is very unusual. Hopefully it's all blown over.

Saved by my own incompetence.

Last night I saw the police were knocking on his door again(not there) so they obviously didn't find him at the house I showed them. I passed that house today and realised I'd pointed to the wrong one (because the officer stopped me from going nearer) I did say it might be the next one, but I was actually four houses out  . I won't have to worry about the police asking me anything again.

Double snorts all round, I think :pig:

Glad to hear that you've been able to put your mind to rest. Stuff like that niggling me in the back of my mind can be really damned annoying sometimes, too!
