I hate the word "Antisocial"

Because of the NT attached connotations. Namely, that if you are "antisocial" it means they probably think you are a half step removed from being a serial killer, sociopath, weirdo, and probable pedophile all rolled into one, or that you likely are all that and just haven't been caught!

There seems to be general confusion/conflation between being anti-social and being asocial, even if you tell someone you are asocial they still seem to think you are a psychopath too.

Excellent point sir. Asocial would be a better description of my general disposition.

I have been accused of being antisocial because I don't really have a social life and I'm quiet most of the time. I have struggled with making friends. I'm not the greatest conversationalist unless I really click with a person. Being chatty is not my natural inclination.

People do tend to think that antisocial and asocial are the same thing even though they are not. People are ignorant about these terms.

I wholeheartedly agree. I wish people wouldn't call me antisocial when I am really just a quiet person with a few friends. Antisocial and asocial have completely different definitions, but most people don't seem to know the difference.

That is one of the reasons I like the word. If I don't want to socialize and I don't want to explain why, I just tell people that I am anti social or that I am a sociopath and they leave me alone. Works every time. :D

The word is ambiguous.

Antisocial actually means "a danger to society", and not just "doesn't go to parties". You hafta be something like a pedophile, or an axe murderer to be "antisocial". Yeah "asocial" would be the term for "doesn't go to parties".

But if you LIKE the term because it drives folks away...then...you could also tell them you have leprosy.

I like the term, I prefer my own company. Might possibly come of as conceited, but probably not psycho.

Yeah.. I completely agree.. except for the fact that the definition of antisocial includes none of those things & none of them are things that anyone assumes about antisocial people. Know what they assume? That you either don't like socializing, or cannot socialize. That's it, that's all. The rest of that nonsense is all in your own anxious assuming mind.
