Could you hold a conversation with a stranger for 5 minutes?

In my late teens when I was my most social I could. Now there is no way I could be that social.

I might be able to if they were the one to initiate it (like if they just asked me questions and I replied). I wouldn’t be able to initiate it or come up with any topic of conversation.

I would have a lot of trouble doing this. I could talk for a minute or two about the weather, but after that, there’d be awkward silence.

Yes. A few times I have even approached a stranger on the street and initiated a conversation.

Like Stampy said, if the other person initiates or if the situation requires it, I can do it. That being said, it would be a constant strain, and I assume I give that fact away in body language or voice, so most people usually don't bother continuing for long.

Depends on my mood if I feel like I could do that.

My most social mood could do more than 5 mins.

But I won't ever expect anything else from said stranger/s. None of them had gone from strangers to acquaintance yet.


Any less social mood than that would involve fewer sentences or so. If not a nod that I did heard that person, and never spoken back.
Otherwise, it just means that I need something from that person.

As others have said, I might be able to if the other person initiated, but I have selective mutism that prevents me from doing the initiating myself - my vocal cords just will not respond no matter how hard I try to speak. Initiating conversations of any sort with anyone outside of immediate family is a surefire way to get that to happen, for me. If it was a conversation conducted through some sort of written communication, I suppose I might even be able to initiate, but I'd probably struggle to find a topic the other person was willing to discuss and I wasn't too afraid of being judged about.

I have before when I worked in retail but the strangers were doing a majority of the talking.
