I am an autistic mother and I was just curious what the percentage was of my children getting autism. I don't mind either way. I just wanted to know.

There's really no way of knowing.

It's quite possible you'll bear a child with varying degrees of autism.

It's also quite possible you'll bear a fully "neurotypical" child.

Autism is genetic---but it is also random in nature. It's not classically genetic or chromosomal----though it is found in some genetic or chromosomal disorders.

It is likely that your children will have a few more autistic traits than average, but it's hard to say if they will be at a diagnosable level.

What you can do as a parent is to be aware of your children's needs and issues as they develop, keeping an open mind as to what they may have for neurology. Secondly, it is important that you be aware of limits your own autism may place on your parenting. For instance, if you don't make eye contact with your children, can't tolerate them crying, need to be apart from them a lot, and just can't bring yourself to interact with other parents for such things as play dates or Scouts, you may be depriving your children of important parent roles.

What ages are your children?

I didn't know if she was pregnant with a child, or if she actually had any children.

I believe it would help if you were able to state some of the "symptoms" any of your children have. Maybe people very knowledgeable could help you in this way.

Like Bea, for example.

My grandmother had seven children. Two were autistic (one was my mother). So 2/7

My mother had two children. One was autistic (me). So 1/2

I have three children. Two are autistic. So 2/3

It looks like it's at least a 50% chance in my family.

Sometimes it would be easier to just have a pet.

I'm an autistic mum too. My kids are 4 and 7, one of them shows some aspie-ish behaviour, the other seems fairly typical. I think if you are aware of your own autistic traits you will notice them if or when they start to appear in your kinds.

Being an autistic mother has its challenges, but there is no reason we cannot be good parents. Especially if, like me, you get a bit "special interest" about being a mother, and start researching everything!

Congratulations on your son. Wishing you all the best!
