One reason:

Autistic people are resistant to change. They have a hard time changing themselves.

I've had a hard time changing myself.

For one, many people with aspergers are more intelligent than your average shrink. You can see it coming.... Psychologists can also get bogged down in a lot of emotional rationalizations that don't necessarily apply to someone with aspergers. If I can rationally think through a problem, I don't need to agonize over my rotten childhood, for example. Frequently psychologists are wedded to a particular theory of therapy and some of them, even the more or less rational ones, are pretty weird.

From what I have read in this forum, many aspies have had to try a variety of therapists before they find one that can actually help them.

In my experience psychologists are more likely to be egotistical jerks while social workers seem more human, but not always.

My best experience with a psychologist was with one who specialized in autism. She was pretty great and respectful. She treated me as an equal.

I totally agree, my most recent psychologist told me that it's common for Autistic people to see things in absolutes and as rigid and unchangeable. In my case, I tend to repeatedly think the same thing in my head over and over which makes it harder and harder to change my decision once I have already considered it hundreds of times. A lot of the time, the things the psychologist says and suggests I already know, and just hearing it from someone else sadly doesn't change my mind.

Many of them are not particularly knowledgeable in autism, or have ideas about it that they are stubborn about. Due to both the spectrum nature of autism and the likelihood of comorbidity, we require someone with a more flexible approach that is willing to figure out how we work and work with it.

Someone who specializes in autism is generally your best bet.

Psychologists tend to want to make us fit into little boxes of categories that they have studied. We don't fit into these boxes but they don't understand this.
