For 25 years
I have written in short lines.
It's not poetry.

It helps me
line up my thoughts
in single file
so they can get out the door,
so to speak.

Oh,
and my handwriting
is remarkably irratic.

Anyone else?

Handwriting - usually awful and very variable; a graphologist would think I have multiple personalities!

My writing style, I think, is very influenced by having been a computer coder since my teens. Much as I try not to, I just can't help writing in nested clauses (usually with lots of asides in parentheses like this one), and I take ages too long forever reconsidering editing correcting procrastinating about messing up everything I write so that [I can no longer work out whether] it says exactly what I mean, and end up tying myself in grammatical knots. I also learned very young about figures of speech and metaphors, and they fascinate me immensely. I think I end up gilding the lily and gold-plating my writing with them more often than I have hot dinners; probably trying to over-compensate for sounding too much like a Markov Chain sentence generating algorithm and not enough like a regular human English user. It works well enough for technical documentation (which I've done professionally), but the only creative writing I ever found rewarding was song-writing, where the need to fit the musical structure tempered the worst of my literary tics (I make no claim of having been any good at it!)

[That single paragraph took well over 30 minutes to write. I started counting how many times I clicked "preview", too; but I lost count very quickly!]

[...and, as soon as I clicked "submit", I realised that it needed editing!]

I disagree that your style is not poetry. This single quoted "stanza," or paragraph if you like, contains a beautiful image and metaphor. I think you are more poetic than you give yourself credit for!

I spend a lot of time making sure things are spelled right and rechecking how I wrote something to make sure it makes sense.

More strangely I tend to bounce around to different parts of what I'm writing.

An example (Numbers are order of writing each line);

Normal writing:
1
2
3
4
5

My writing:
2
1
3
5
4

On paper, my hand writing is barely legible, and as far as I can tell, inconstant in style. Though it has improved greatly. I can neither write nor read cursive.

I dub mine 'screwed'.
Because it's hit-miss, inconsistent wordings, off model grammars, and odds of line arrangement and punctuations usage.

It may or may not rhyme. I may do (-- this or that...) or not.
It's randomly 12345/23451/34512/45123/51234/54321/etc...

Maybe it's because of my 1st language (that has a different grammar system from English) and nonverbal learning/thinking preferences.

Mine aren't very weird.
People have commented that I write very small (about 1/4 inch high in freehand, even with plenty of room)

Oh, I do bounce around, too. I think nothing of it, but it's been commented on before.

I am poetic, but it doesn't come out like BikeSlug's
I have spontaneously sung in unrehearsed verse, Disney-style, when there aren't other people around. (Sometimes I can remember afterward to write the words down before they're gone forever.)

I'm also very good at making up riddles. They're easier than poems and I have sometimes spewn a few out in a matter of minutes. This isn't related to writing style, I suppose, but it could possibly be related to Asperger's.
When I write a riddle, I first decide the answer, then come up with several things related to it, which sort of jiggle in my head as I make further connections. I think I think in riddles naturally, and am pretty good at solving them too. Here's my favorite. It's the second one I wrote:

Knowledge from one end,
a cold stony heart.
Born of a sapling,
but only in part.
Hide-and-seek
is a game it will play.
It takes back
what it did not say.

Bouncing.
Had no word
for that before.
Thanks.

It comes & goes
in handwriting,
and it confuses
and irritates me.

I resort to a
confusing and
irritating
abbreviation system
instead

My handwriting is total s**t.

Even though I am good at drawing - it seems to have no bearing on it.
