starting a theatre company for ASD/ADHD/others
So theatre has been my deep deep passion since I was a child. I grew up doing it, went to college for it, went to university for it, intend to continue graduate studies if I'm able to get into the school I want and can save up the money.
But I'm kind of at a certain place along that timeline now. I just finished university and I'm making my way in my community as a professional playwright - not making any money at it, but my work is being performed.
I would love to eventually found a theatre company that works with ASD kids, and even ADHD or other disabilities. I'd also like a section for adults.
Theatre saved me a lot of grief - I can blend in for short periods of time with neurotypicals. Of course, now I have the reverse pain of having my diagnosis invalidated because these people only see the "character" I'm playing for them.
But I'd like to start a theatre that works with spectrumites to really increase their confidence, their joy, their play, their opinion of what they can do.
Oh and yes I've seen Autism the Musical.
Here's what I'm wondering. Can I start a program like this with no formal training in autism therapies? By going on my own experience as an autistic actor? I'm sure that can be a part of it, but would it help for me to read or learn about a technique? Like maybe Greenspan?

everybody's playing the game
but nobody's rules are the same
nobody's on nobody's side
We now have a two year old autistic theatre company called Stealth Aspies. We have been to the Arts Council of Great Britain too. We have played Edinburgh Festival twice and currently are in the middle of a run there. We did Brighton fringe this year too. It's going really well.
Start your own project. Look at ours at www.paulwady.com and, when we get round to it, www.stealthaspies.com.
@StealthAspies contains the survey links you can fill in to be part of our show.
Film to be found on Stealth Aspies Youtube.
