(clicky)recent study says impaired CPEB4 protein behind autism. CPEB4 is vital in embryonic development, assisting with neuroplasticity and helping regulate the expression of certain genes during fetal brain development. "Since CPEB4 is known to regulate numerous genes during embryonic development, this protein emerges as a possible link between environmental factors that alter brain development and the genes that predispose to autism," says first author on the new research, Alberto Parras.
this study was also published in (clicky)Nature magazine

I didnt read the full paper linked to the article, but it is not strange that it only is one gene that might be "the cause" for at least some cases of autism. Based on what i read the article seems legit and not a scam - but im not sure.

Although this isnt that good of a comparison, in about 50% of cancer cases the gene p53 is mutated. p53 is a gene that gets a faulty cell to either repair itself or self destruct, so if p53 isnt working properly faulty cells can carry on dividing, which can lead to cancerous cells.

I hope they are working hard on that P53 gene to figure out how to keep it from mutating.

Anything that starts with "recent study" or "studies suggest" makes my brain hurt.

Why is there no "Study says autistic people should be allowed to be who they are and society should stop trying to fix or cure them"? Oh, right, because NTs are idiots and that will never happen.

knowing that I might lose the self I've grown to appreciate, i'd still want a cure available to those who want it. it's actually too late for me but if I had a niece or nephew who suffered, i'd want them to have the option.
