As I can only sleep with earplugs and sometimes wear them for a few hours during the day too, I'd be interested in the best earplugs you've ever used/any special recommendations. The problem is that if I really want silence and put them in pretty far, there's often a painful pressure on one spot, usually only in the left ear though. Maybe my left ear canal is crooked or something. Also I kinda worry if wearing earplugs a lot can be unhealthy/damage the ears in some way? I've read that you can have earplugs custom-made to fit your eardrums, I wonder if those also block out more sound (the ones I use block 33 DB)

I buy Mack's silicone putty earplugs. I haven't had a problem with pain.

At my old job, they had a big container of Moldex "Goin' Green" earplugs that I really liked.

3M makes similar ones that are good, but the material isn't quite as soft and squishy.

I have a pair of green rubber ones that I use for a quick fix, they're also nice because you can pull them out a little bit to control how much volume you're blocking.

I also have a nice pair of ear muffs (with built-in speakers) for longer jobs where I want to listen to audio, but they're obviously heavier and bulkier than the in-ear plugs, and I usually take my glasses off because it makes it more comfortable.

I've been using Quies wax ear plugs but I have had a strange tapping / pulsing in my eardrum since using them.

I currently use some 3M reusable earplugs with a cord. The actual earplugs are orange in color while the cord is blue. They come with a case and the earplugs are said to reduce sounds by about 30 decibels. My hair covers my ears, concealing the earplugs. Let me just say that these earplugs are amazing. During school, I keep them in my backpack in case of fire drills. However, one time during English class, I heard some sort of siren tone coming from the loudspeaker. It wasn't very loud (a lot less than the nasty electronic horns they had at my elementary school), but it was a little startling. Apparently, that was the fire alarm, but we were told not to evacuate because it was a false alarm.

I have been diagnosed with hyperacusis (decreased tolerance to everyday sounds, sounds cause pain), and all the recommendations for that is NOT to wear earplugs as they make you more used to silence, and therefore will make any noise seem louder.
It's a bit of a catch-22 situation.

I use noise canceling headphones from Bose.

That's true, I always hate taking them out while I'm at work, because everything there is super loud.

I can't stand earplugs! When using them, my ears sense silence and drive the volume to the max and I hear my own hearth and breathing and whatever body function amplified x 1000 and it sounds like a hellish version of thunderstorm of doom!

I sometimes play white or pink noise through headphones or speakers that I have beside my bed using my very aged android tablet. That works better for me. Or I listen to asmr audios or self hypnosis or whatever weird stuff there is on youtube. Tibetan singing bowls sound very nice too.

Possibly Aspie (diagnosed by an autism expert, doc moves abroad, forced to change docs and all say it's schizophrenia NOS or schizo-affective disorde or personality disorders. initial doc was a colleague of uncle Simon btw. you do the math.). (edit: by Uncle Simon I mean Simon Baron Cohen. Just to clear things up.)

I use musician’s ear plugs. They make everything much quieter but without muffling sound, which is perfect for me because I have enough trouble understanding what people say as it is. I can’t feel them once they’re in as well, sometimes I won’t take them out when I’m somewhere quite because i forgot about them!
