My 19 was recently diagnosed and his father isn't accepting the diagnosis. His father and I are no longer together, but my son has been legally living with him since our divorce. No one currently has guardianship over our son. I'm not sure what to do in how I can best set him up for his future. He doesn't look for work or have a car.

Welcome to WP

I think the best and easiest way to try to encourage him is through a special interest if he has one. If he does, find out what it is if you don't know already. Often times a special interest can be a great way to get a child involved with others who do that same thing and can eventually lead to a career path. it will also encourage him to meet others and get active in the community and that might help him start to think about his own independence. It will also be nonthreatening.

What does your son want to do with his life? Does he want a car? What are his strengths and weaknesses? Why does his father disagree with the diagnosis? Does your son agree with the diagnosis?

Ask him what his life dreams and passions are.
