I just started watching the new Morse programme, “Endeavour”, and I love young Morse. I’ve read a couple of the books, but never saw the original Morse series. My impression of the young Endeavour is that he has a lot of autistic traits; his knowledge of obscure topics, his bluntness and preference for solitude, his love of opera and crossword puzzles, and his one track mind that gets hyper focused on his cases. What are your thoughts? His actor, Shaun Evans, reminds me rather of Eddie Redmayne in his portrayal of Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I can’t put my finger on why precisely, but there’s just something similar about them.

In the original series Morse always has his music playing loudly in his car (the Jaguar) and I surmise he had the very best of sound systems - traits that I identify with.

Most fictional male detectives, from Sherlock Holmes onward, had rather aspie traits.

Fictional female sleuths , like miss Marple, tended to have acute people skills, so not so much.
