I have heard of the term “Spatial Awareness” but in truth I don’t really know what it is. Can someone explain what Spatial Awareness is?

I supposedly have good ' spatial awareness ' , I'll try to explain . In it's simplest form , it is awareness of the the space between objects of focus . For instance , if you were to lay on the ground under a tree with full foliage and look up , most people would focus on the trees' limbs and leaves . Some people , often artists , give the space between the limbs and leaves the same ' weight ' as they do the limbs and leaves . An example of that would be hanging a picture on a wall and ' weighing ' the space around the picture and then visually balancing it . Think about placing a painting between two windows , and ' balancing ' the space on either side of it until it looked right .

Mind you , this is a very basic and simplistic ' Wiki ' explanation of it . Hope it helps

For me spatial awareness is knowing how far away from (or how near to) an object you are.

I think it is also being able to tell how much room an object needs if you are to place it between two other objects.

I must have very poor spatial awareness then.

In fact my Mom always says I am "prepositionally challenged".

"Space" has a special meaning for graphic artists, but they are only dealing with 2 dimensions. With spatial awareness, I can find things in the dark, reach for things and always connect, and move a large object through a house without knocking things over. I can pack an odd-shaped collection of things together neatly, and navigate a new place with only a map. I get a pretty good idea of what a given dimension will look like in real life. Geometry is easy.
