I found this clip in the British Medical Journal in a report about autism research databases

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) affect around 1% of people1, and have a significant impact on children and adults and their relatives.2 ,3 Recent data show that the life-time cost to the UK for an individual with ASD and intellectual disability (ID) is £1.5 million, and £0.92 million for ASD without ID.

£920,000! I have no idea where they got that figure.

What do your experts say you cost?

It says ASD and intellectual disability, so I assume that figure is for severe autism.
I suppose a lot of the costs would come from providing support people and for disability payments.

I've never received any concessions for my ASD, and also worked most of my life, so I come very cheap.

£1.5 million, over 60 years is £480 per week.

I think what they mean is that the "cost to the UK" is what the difference is in terms of what is added to the economy.

So a person without ASD would be expected to add an additional £480 per week to the UK economy over someone with ASD.

Basically what they are saying is they have made up a number off the top of their head to say what they want to say in the report, rather than it being based on an actual real-world figure.

Remember the old adage : 52% of statistics are made up; the other 72% are manipulated by the author and the remaining 29% are just plain wrong.

I used to assist an autistic guy who's care costs were enormous. £140 a day for care, plus admin, plus a huge budget for activities and expenses. There were workshops, activities and outings on most days. I used to drive him to gigs or go camping for the weekend, all paid by the hour.
I may go back and work with/for him again someday.

The £920,000 is ASD without intellectual disability, which is bollocks. So far I have recieved a 20 page booklet (with big writing, a lot of index, and very little actual info).

That makes sense.
