That came up in my Facebook feed. Ballpark worker spits on pizzas. For some reason it's casually mentioned he's autistic. Ummm.... What does that have to do with anything news outlet? Kinda odd.

It really has nothing to do with the news outlet. Kerley's defense attorney seems to have put forward his autism as a partial excuse for his illegal action, although at the same time saying he understands his responsibility. Mentioning his autism might be either an attempt to get public sympathy (because the video sparked a lot of public outrage) or an attempt to build a legal defense.

I'm autistic and there are very few situations in which I would claim my autism was responsible for some action I had taken. The few times I'd claim it would be if I did something due to sensory overwhelm and I couldn't pay proper attention or if I misread some social cues. I really have the same moral culpability as any neurologically normal person.

The media is going to report what defense attorneys say.
