There seems to be a large number of people who were diagnosed later in life. I'm curious as to how many people were diagnosed at a younger age. If you feel comfortable talking about it, state the age you were diagnosed and why your parents suspected that something wasn't right (if you know).

I'll start - diagnosed in 1998 (not sure when, so I would have been 4 or 5). Non-verbal, struggling to walk, still soiling myself, lack of eye contact, disliked human contact, meltdowns over sensory issues etc.

I was diagnosed with autism when I was about 3 years old.

I was ten.

I was having constant meltdowns, stayed to myself, never made eye contact, stimmed a ton, couldn't tie my shoes, was clutzy, had trouble in school, hated adults, insomnia that was pretty troublesome on top of nightmares, had trouble keeping a consistent friend, spent most of my day hanging out with bugs, was extremely irritable, wouldn't let people touch me, would have meltdowns after school everyday, I would wear a coat in the heat of summer, I would meltdown on hearing music, self harmful stims that had gotten me misdiagnosed with depression, trouble following instructions, lacked manners, had special interests unusual for my age, an unnaturally vivid imagination, inability to learn a new language among other things.

I likely would of been diagnosed earlier, but where we lived when I was younger most of our neighbors were either autistic or adhd, none of us diagnosed. One of them was a boy my age that was nonverbal (I was about five).

Clearly I wasn't an easy kid to raise, but my mom only really knew I was that unusual after we moved. And only found I was autistic after taking a business psychology class and learning about it, and it sounding very much so like me. So she brought me to a diagnostic clinician of some sort and I was diagnosed autism (Aspergers at the time, due to my lack of speech delay) among several other things.

I wasn't diagnosed under 5 years old but I was still diagnosed in childhood, at 8 years old. That is still young.

I showed no noticeable ASD signs before I was 4 and a half. I was like any typically developing child. Then when I started school at 4 and a half, all my ASD symptoms suddenly all came out on my first day. Only nobody suspected ASD at the time; the teachers thought it was from abuse at home (which was NOT the case), and my parents were worried and shocked as to why I was behaving so out of character at school. After several behavioural assessments and lots of support, I finally received a diagnosis of ASD 4 years later. But I was a sociable child and I enjoyed playing with other children.

I thought the diagnostic criteria for an ASD was abnormality before 36 months? What were your symptoms like?

Sounds similar to me, with the exception that you did not have a language delay, walking delay or a delay in potty training like myself. Did you have any obsession with poo and/or wee at all? I used to soil my pants almost everyday in school and I had a toy truck I used as a toilet in my room, used to wee in it every night until my parents realised what I was doing. Poo, I either pooped my pants in school, or I would play with it at home. Used to smear it on my face like camoflauge or something......yeah, I definitely 100% was not right as a kid. I'm not as bad as I once was, still require "substantial support" according to my local government authority, though, and I do feel like I have more issues going for me than a lot of other people I know on the spectrum.

Hopefully in the next few years I will improve further and can consider getting a full-time job, and then after that the next step is to try and make myself as independent as possible in the hope that I'll eventually be able to live in my own place! (Yay!)

Actually I did have a bit of a delay in potty training, and it was late into elementary school when I stopped regularly wetting the bed (The last time was when I was either thirteen or fourteen). I don't know how much of that was autism and how much of it was just being constipated from lack of drinking water.
I'll admit as a kid I played with it sometimes, and on stubborn streaks would sometimes refuse to leave my room and would use the restroom where I wasn't supposed to.

I stopped soiling myself at school when I was 11, just before I started high school thankfully, definitely would have ended up even more marginalised if I was still doing it in high school.....not sure when I stopped doing it in bed. 12, 13? Around then.
I still really enjoy the smell of excrement and urine.......fortunately I know it's wrong to be playing with it now though.

What would you say were your 3 biggest issues during your childhood?

My sound sensitivity was my biggest one, I had trouble understanding speech in most environments, I was constantly in pain and even the sound of music being played by a shop I walked by would set me off, or if a classmate hummed. It got bad when I was about five I think, before then it was still hyper but it built up fully by then.
The rest depend on who you ask, and are much harder to rank.

I know the feeling. Having panic attacks whenever there were fireworks, sirens, alarms, busy roads, loud crowds, hoovers, power tools etc. was ridiculous. I'm a bit better now, but the more severe noises (such as fireworks and sirens) almost always cause me to panic still.

Besides that, for me, my aforementioned toilet issues, and my lack of any meaningful relationships with anyone besides my mum until I was 11 (basically spent my entire primary (elementary) school life sitting alone in class or wandering the playground alone, getting bullied, I used to lash out at the kids all the time including girls as well).

Well, I think my ASD was regressive. I was born normal I think, then the day before I started school my brain changed. That is my theory anyway.

But I don't think every ASD child shows peculiar signs before 3 years, especially those with Asperger's (like me). A lot of mild Asperger's symptoms are quite typical in babies and toddlers anyway which the child usually grows out of, so if there were signs of ASD with me it was probably passed off as normal baby/toddler behaviour.

To be honest, I'm quite jealous of those who were diagnosed at such a young age. I might have averted a myocardial infarction at age 34 due to Autistic burnout with a timely diagnosis. I was diagnosed at 43 so EXTREMELY late in life.

I was bullied a lot as well, a few times they even tried to beat me up but I was rather big for my age and easily won. Besides that, I spent a lot of time with bugs and small animals around the school, they would go out of their way to find bugs, bring them to me, and then kill them in front of me to make me upset. Once they collectively stomped a frog to death in front of me. Kids can be seriously messed up.

I was diagnosed when I was 3 years old. They knew I had autism because of my lack of eye contact, speech issues, low muscle tone, stimming, sensory issues, talking to myself, not involved with other kids, lack of awareness, and extreme emotional responses. I also had an aide with me in preschool.
