My mother is adamant I have "mild prader Willi syndrome". Yet somehow, I was able to live independently for 4 years without eating myself to death. I did my own grocery shopping and could buy whatever I wanted. Some days I did not eat at all. Some days I just did not feel hungry. My mother is adamant the because I enjoy a binge once in awhile then I must have prader Willi syndrome. I stopped binge eating when I moved out. Because I no longer enjoyed it when I moved out. Possibly because no one was stopping me and my mother wasn't around to stress me out. I would only binge on sweets.

She's also adamant I have it because I was floppy as a baby and had low muscle tone. I am pretty sure there's several other conditions in which that happens to a baby. There are also several foods I could not eat even if I was starving to death for real. My mother is a Doomsday prepper and I temporarily live in a shed with her doomsday food. If I had prader Willi, wouldn't I be eating that all by now? She says I would not because it is not prepared and because I think it's gross(dehydrated stuff for the apocalypse basically). But she does not understand prader Willi. I keep trying to tell my mom that prader Willi syndrome is genetic and you have to be tested for it. I am 32 years old I think if I I had it, I would have known by now. My mother is just one of those people who cannot be corrected and will get upset if you try. First it was bipolar disorder, then it was borderline personality, now it's mild prader Willi. I am beginning to wonder if my mom might have Munchausen by proxy.

Is your mother a physician? Has she consulted a physician? Has any physician actually tested you for Prader-Willi Syndrome? Have these test results come back positive? Have you received an official diagnosis from an appropriately educated and licensed physician?

No and no. It has never even been suggested by a doctor. My mom just thinks I have it.

Then she is WRONG.

You can truthfully tell her that no doctor has ever diagnosed you with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

I went to middle school and high school with a boy who had Prader Willi Syndrome. I don't know the specifics about what preventative measures his family needed to take, but I do remember that our school learned a bit about the syndrome because he went to school there. From what I recall he was prone to an explosive temper and he was schooled in the "special education" wing of the school.

If your binge eating desires have stopped and you live on your own, than what's your mother's issue?

I had to move back after there was an arson at my apartment complex. As for the binge eating, I don't know. I just wanted to bake some cookies for the sake of baking them and I thought my dad might like them and she thinks I got prader Willi syndrome.

She has lied to me and said they have about other things. I asked my psychiatrist if I was ever diagnosed with borderline personality disorder because she was saying I was. He said no. I told my mom and she said he had to lie because people with that condition should never be told they have it.

She claims my "prader Willi" is mild. The next week she will just think I have a completely different disorder.

It's probable you don't have Prader-Willi Syndrome. Very probable.

Why does your mother insist you have it? I guess she read a Wikipedia entry, and concluded you had it.

Don't listen to her.

But if you want to find out, go to a doctor.

As often happens, it sounds like you are the sane one in the family.

Don't pay any attention to her when she gets like this. If she persists, tell her you don't want to hear it right now. You aren't feeling like discussing it - maybe later. If she asks "when?" suggest "Never? Does never work for you?"

There is the opposite problem, as well. Parents who insist that their children do not have Asthma or Autism, and who also insist that their children are just "lazy" or "acting out".

 Grrr ...

The symptoms you describe are not anything like prader-willi. Fnord is correct. It requires a medical and genetic diagnosis by a professional experienced with this very rare condition.

What I have seen over and over again in parents of autists is a compulsion to keep "figuring it out." This tends to be counter productive especially after the child is an adult. You might try diffusing the situation by not arguing with her about it. She seems to have her own set of problems that are her responsibility.

I have tried that. She just yells at me for being rude or accuses me of being mean to her

Ahh ... so she's trolling you for a reason to play the martyr. To wit:

She states a false claim --> You call her out on it --> She accuses you of being mean and claims to be a victim.

She'd fit right in with the L&D crowd on this website.

I doubt it.

However if she is convinced, A chromosome test can prove or disprove it.

Never heard of "Prader Willi Syndrome" until I saw this thread.

All I know about it is what I read on Wiki just now (having seen this thread). So I aint no expert. But it looks to me from Wiki that if you really did have the syndrome that you would be far more impaired than you are (kinda like a Down's Syndrome person). So I would bet on you NOT having it if you actually got tested.

Maybe you could accuse your mother of having Munchausen's by Proxy syndrome...
