England (I haven't seen an update on it): 1 in 100
United States: 1 in 88
Australia: 1 in 110
Canada: 1 in 147 have Autism there.
Utah: 1 in 47 here have Autism.
India: 1 in 250
France: 1 in 150
Germany: 1.4% (there weren't any exact numbers)
Norway: .87%
Japan: According to a study that was done a while ago, 1.61 out of every 100 folks have Autism in Japan. It could have gone way up.
Maine: Over 1% have Autism here.
Minnesota: Over 1% have Autism in Minnesota.
Oregon: Over 1% have Autism here.
If you think that the Autism rate in Utah is high, check this one out:
South Korea: 1 in 38.

Very often those are just different studies and so on.

It also depends, if they also count the PDD-NOS cases and where they do the cut off and so on.
I'm from Germany and we don't have 1,4% of the ppl dx with autism, not even close. Autism is still a very rare diagnoses. Those are just some estimations.

Are there any statistics for autism in undeveloped countries, something I have often wondered? Is autism a condition confined to developed countries and there way of life?

I have no idea what you are trying to say.

Is autism as widespread in undeveloped countries as it is in the developed ones? That was my statement.

Pretty sure it is. They just don’t call it autism.

He is probably not a native English speaker because, as his profile says, he lives somewhere in "Europe" (outside of the UK presumably).

But he probably means that where there is no mental health industry they don't find autistics, and that they do find autistics in countries that do have shrinks and a mental health infrastructure to support shrinks in rooting out the autistics in the population.

As there is no clear boundary between high functioning autistic and normal, the actual statistics will greatly depend on how much weirdness is considered enough for a diagnosis in a given society.

Developed countries have high autism rates because more people have actually been diagnosed as autistic, due to modern medicine and awareness. Also this thread makes it sound like so many autistic people is a *bad* thing, which it is not.

Yes, it's genetic and poverty doesn't erase genes.
However undeveloped countries have less resources for diagnosis.

I found no official data available.
And, honestly, I just read some press articles in Polish looking for this statistics and now I need to rinse all this BS from my head... apart from a couple of sensible self-advocates, there is still that infamous Autism $peaks-like narrative everywhere.
The estimations don't differ from other countries, the order of magnitude is 1%, exact results depend on who does the estimation.

In an undeveloped country, you don't get a diagnosis of autism, instead you take the honorable office of Village Nutcase.

Yep.
In some cases literally honorable, in other cases your life may be in danger from your village and everything in between.

magz,

Thanks for looking into it. I have lots of other questions for you regarding AS and Poland...if you wouldn't mind messaging me.

I was born in Poland, but left during the mid-nineties. I have vivid memories of being a kid and feeling different and totally out of place. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

Edit: I would message you, however I'm not sure if my messages go through.
