I think I was doing to wrong. People told me to smile so I walked around the entire day smiling. So apparently your supposed to smile AT people, is that the only time your supposed to smile?

I think the only time I smile on command is when someone is taking my photograph and they say "Smile". Otherwise I only smile when I feel like it.

At times, I might bow instead of smile. I'm not a really "smiley" type of person. But I'm not dour, either.

People usually smile at other people when they want to show friendliness or good intentions towards them. If you like to watch TV series or movies, you can use them to see some example situations. Don't smile all the time, it's weird.

Yes.
The smile basically means: "I have no aggressive intentions".
