Someone told me on Reddit they looked at my profile and said it seems I have motives than asking questions. I am not sure what that meant but I noticed since her responses towards me, no one has asked her other questions about her medical issue since in her AMA thread. Gee I wonder why or just a coincidence?

Does anyone ever get "you have motives" accusations? I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. I have been called a troll before, been accused of provoking people, been accused of being condescending or patronizing, been accused of insulting or attacking others when I never even called them names or even put them down. I try to be polite and friendly to everyone and only time I am ever rude to someone or snap is if they attack me or are rude to me.

Do you mean in real life as well, or just online?

You don't come off that way here on WP.

There was a young lady on another aspie website I used to frequent who complained that folks on other websites would get angry at her because of "what she laid between the lines" when she was NOT laying anything between the lines, and "with me there is no 'between the lines'".

I suspect that that could be an issue among aspies/autistics. Normal NTs imply things and ASD folks may not understand it when accidently appear to be implying things that they are not implying in internet text.

I meant online. As a child I have been misjudged and all but I can't remember anything in my adulthood where someone gave me these accusations other than saying I was arguing with them. I just don't have contact with people nor do I really interact so I don't get these accusations anymore except for online because that is where my social interaction is.

Everybody has a "motive" for doing most anything.

No....I don't see you having "ulterior motives."

Yes my motive for posting this thread is to see if this has happened to anyone else and if anyone has ever gotten other accusations too.

People often project their own thoughts onto others...
The dark recesses of their own mind can warp their perception of reality...
Happens all the time...

One of the problems I had as a child was to find it incomprehensible that someone would lie to me for no good reason other than to win at games-man-ship...
Probably part of the reason I am so cynical these days...<shrug>

This is often a problem between NTs and naughtie auties...
Whatever you do, as an autie, don't be too honest or open... 8O
More often than not, the other person will think you have a hidden agenda...
I am talking from a lot of experience here...

With me (and, I think, a lot of other AS people), "what you see is what you get." I almost always say what I mean and mean what I say. But NT people very often have hidden meanings and agendas and so project that expectation onto us. Even my wife sometimes thinks I'm being sarcastic when I'm just stating a fact.

I have been told things like "I know what you're up to", when I'm not up to anything.

Usually I have too much difficulty just writing out my thoughts, to be up to something in the process.

To the degree that people assume I have ulterior motives, I estimate that they are habitual liars. I've also been called unmotivated.
When Machiavelli heard that another of the courtiers had died suddenly, he mused "I wonder what he meant by that?"

The way I heard the story was that when Metternich (the great Austrian diplomat of the Napleonic era) heard that the Russian ambassador had just died Metternich said "hmmm...I wonder what his...motive could be."

When people have assumed that my motives were somewhat "less than altruistic", I told them that they were correct.

Volunteer for a charitable cause? Sure! When I was single, it was a great way to meet women. Now that I'm married, I can write off certain expenses from our tax bill.

Mentor the new intern? Okay! As long as I remain both pleasant and informative, the boss sees me as an asset, and the intern can later be used as a reference if I want to change jobs.

Give blood? Swell! "... sorry boss, I'm still a little woozy ... can I take the rest of the afternoon off? Thanks!"

Everybody has an ulterior motive -- some selfish reason for doing what they do for others, whether it's for the money, the gratitude, or just a "warm-fuzzy" feeling. Some of us are simply not ashamed to admit it!
