Changes in gene activity in specific brain cells are associated with the severity of autism in children and young adults with the disorder, according to a UC San Francisco study of postmortem brain tissue. The study's new insights into how specific changes in gene expression contribute to the disease's symptoms by altering the function of brain circuits provides an important foundation for the development of treatments for the disorder, the authors say.

Any new research is of interest. But "disease"... "treatment".... ugh.

I thought even the psychiatric profession didn’t consider us "mentally ill."

I'm not diseased and nor do I need to be cured.

.... better understand exactly how the specific cellular changes they identified in this study impact the functioning of neural circuits in patients with autism, the researchers plan to recreate these alterations in three-dimensional "organoid" models of brain development that can be grown in the lab from patients' skin cells....

Autistic brain balls!

I agree. That was the first thing to catch my eye too. It's hard to try to read any of it seriously knowing Autsim is being looked at as a illness. I am not sick.

Just reading the word "disease" took maybe 3 or 4 years off my life span.

Well I guess we can "relax" now. NTs will *always* see us as broken and damaged and worthless to society. They won't be happy until they've committed genocide on us or use us against our will as test subjects for their Nazi-like experiments in a vain attempt to "cure" us.

Guys, please don't forget that Autism spectrum disorder is that: a spectrum. At the extreme end of it, there are individuals who are unable to speak or live on their own, for whom sensory processing is a very challenging act.
I can see why that would be considered a "disease" and undesirable.
Moderate and medium intense cases are to be seen differently. As with all spectra, it is hard to draw the line between "a different way of processing" and "illness".

Of course the scientists are playing with fire.
I mean, let's be honest, the headline of the future will read: "science finds cure for autism, sharp drop in scientists, surge in business majors and faith healers"

Ooooh! I hope it'll be a vaccine!
