The foot specialist came today. She does a good job on my feet, but she speaks to me in an exaggerated manner as though I’m a bit simple .

Yes but it's only because I'm a foreigner and speak weird.

Yes. Certain people talk to me normal, and many talk to me like I'm a child.

Yes, because I can seem pretty "thick" until things finally begin to click.

People do this to me sometimes. It can be really annoying depending on the extent that a person does it. I’ve been known to embody Wednesday Addams on the occasions where a person pushes this to the extreme.

I take after my grandmother. She did the same thing when people baby talked to her for being elderly.

Certain acquaintances. I tend to cross them out from my 'to trust in serious stuff list' because to them, I'd need kiddy gloves. Unless this person knows me really well enough -- who truly knew what I'm really capable and incapable of -- to get away with it.

Some relatives too, though a few of them do talk in an exaggerated way on daily basis with others just for the heck of it.

It doesn't help with mishearing words, barely able to decipher and process it on quick succession, or forgetting the whole thing right after being said. Never helps that this simply can happen for no apparent reason.
Even worse when I get to be very capable of doing so and respond quickly in the past, it would mean they expect the same results in the future. Or that in the past they thought I cannot process it, only for me to get insulted with how much I'm able to understand little do they know. :x
But they don't have to know that.

The rest do talk to me with their usual tones unless they are having fun or if it is too serious from their usual ones.
But yeah. I had observed this from time to time. On how people talk to each other on certain tones and terms.

There are some people who speak to me in that manner. It's very annoying. I like to use big words when I'm talking to those people and seeing the surprised looks that they give me in return.

Some doctors have been like that with me. A few have been very loud, like they thought I was deaf, and some talk slowly. One of the doctors wrote “cognitive impairment (?)” on my papers, and it made me wonder if I had one I had never been told about, or if other people think I have one. The same doctor misheard “selective mutism” as “autism,” which made me think it’s common for doctors to talk like that to autistic people.

I know it annoys my mum, too - she has told them “she can hear” and “she understands, she just can’t talk.”

Plenty of people speak to me like I am "simple"

Maybe being "simple" is not such a bad thing

Plenty of people exaggerate

But I don't see the connection

Yep! People talk to me all the time like I'm slow; more in that really slow and cheerful way that adults talk to kids. I'm used to it.

There are a lot of times when I feel like people overexplain things to me more than necessary, they assume that I won't understand very simple concepts. Or people will ask me if I know what a certain word means, and I pride myself on having a vast vocabulary.

I suppose that I come across as young and naive. I am generally a slow processor, but I have a high enough IQ, people are just ignorant how to treat people with differences.

The doctors who assessed me spoke in a very exaggerated way, which I found reassuring. A couple of acquaintances slow down their speech and tone down their mannerisms which I'm actually grateful for because I find "normal" communication too fast and shrill.
