I need to get an ADOS test under United HealthCare PPO. I am extremely depressed and anxious and so I am hoping someone here may be able to help me with this.
My ADHD psychiatrist recommended I get tested for autism. Went to a psychologist who said they perform this testing. After 3.5 hours she said I need the ADOS test to perform a differential diagnosis (due to my childhood and ADHD), but she does not perform this test. Recommended 2 providers who said they have never tested adults and she would not offer to help find another clinician who does (I notified my insurance of the issue). The clinician's office will only contact me after that to ask for payment.
I've contacted every autism center and provider my insurance recommended, even in other cities (over 60 providers so far). Most only test children, and the ones that test adults either don't perform the ADOS test or they don't take my insurance (or sometimes any insurance). Some simply don't return my calls or emails. I've performed Google searches, contacted autism associations, etc. etc.
Unfortunately it seems most clinicians that do perform autism testing (outside of autism centers themselves) either don't adequately specify that they test for autism or if they do, they don't indicate whether they perform this test.
My insurance said they'd cover an out of network provider as a covered in-network benefit but the provider has to fill out a single-case agreement. I contacted the centers I previously found to ask them about this. One refused, one still hasn't returned my calls or emails, and one did return my email and said I'd have to pay a $250 consult fee out of pocket first and when I asked if they could let me know if they'd be willing to do the single-case agreement for the test before I pay this they did not return my calls.
If there is anyone out there that can recommend an action I have not taken or a provider in the Austin area that they're aware of that meets these criteria, I would be very grateful.
