Even though I've never seen the film I remember 13 going on 30 with Jennifer garner and it's where a 13 year old wants to become a 30 year old and is loving it and I can't understand why some people dread it. I found most definitions of middle age are 40, 41 or 45 to 65. I seem to think you are expected to have a family by that time, being a business manager or something with kids and I don't have kids, still single and in a profession like that. I seem to think maybe I'm at least 5 years behind my neurotypical peers and doing things which I wasn't doing 5 years earlier such as driving, in a paid job as though I'm still 24 and won't settle down with someone and have a family till 35 or something instead of 30 I have heard of some people having committed suicide because they feel they've got to that stage in life and haven't changed much as what's expected by that time. It does get on my nerves hearing about people saying 'that's old' and get a sense of shock when they tell them the age number and expect you to be doing something by then and it gets me down and feel unfulfilled. I know someone who is 39 and I don't know if he's still technically a young man because he's below 40.

My 30th birthday will come next year, and I don't want to be 30. I'm not saying 30 is old but it will feel old to me. I don't remember either of my parents being in their 20s, but I remember both of them being in their 30s, and to me they were big, strong, wise man and woman. So I just can't imagine me being in my 30s, because I just still see myself and all the people I grew up with as boys and girls, not men and women.

Also I feel like my youth is slipping away. I read somewhere that women have to start taking more care of their face when they reach 30, and also your metabolism slows down so you have to watch what you eat.

If my 30s goes as quick as my 20s did, then soon my 40th birthday will be looming. 8O

My 60th birthday is looming.....in 1.5 years.

My only sign of being old is my limp at times because of a bad knee.

so far, slowly accumulating gray hairs, wrinkles, and pounds. about 5" more around the waist than when i was 28 [last time i had a waist size under 30"]. definitely heavier. more age spots, more moles. youth is wasted on the young.

I will be 60 in five years and four months. I have a lot of work to do to get myself caught up to where I should have been in my 30s.

I'm 31 and I was in a café today and this old woman told her granddaughter 'that's not a little boy that's a little girl'...

Actually I'm a grown adult...

I'm definitely not 'old' according to people around me, would be nice if I was always treated as an adult though.

To me, middle age is when your body starts letting you down and old age is when you can't rely on your body. Like my granddad, he has arthritis and can't walk. The trouble with this model is that it doesn't account for young disabled people. Even my body started letting me down at 13, my eyes were fine before that.

My waistline is the same as it was when I was 20, though I have gained 25 pounds so I don't look anorexic.

I routinely park far away from the entrance from the supermarket and carry 15 pounds of groceries back to my car.
Though I need the cart when buying 35 pound pails of kitty litter. I'll often buy several pails at once to get a
Target gift card.

How can 30 still be old these days when most people, at least where I live, are now living into their 80's? :?

LOL. I am 60. Believe me, if you have not followed the unwritten rules, (has kids by X age, house paid off by X age) you are treated like you have been in prison for 40 years and just got out. If you are a woman and don't adore kids you get the treatment too. It is all about society forcing people to do things.

I love this quote:
The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.-- Nabokov

To me, it means you were nothing before you came to the earth, you will be nothing when you leave the earth-- for a brief time, you are given a great gift-- to experience feeling, sight, taste, intelligence, joy, even sorrow, etc. Life is between you and the forces of eternity. Stop caring what the australopithecines and bullying crowds want you to do--they are just apes making their little stick houses, playing their trivial counting games. And, do you really care if your genetics get passed on? If you have any sisters or brothers or other relatives with kids, they have already done that job. No one needs kids. Populating the world may have been important when there were only 1 million people. It is not about trying to populate the world with your genes. Heck, you could think of it like the dinosaurs no longer exist either. Although they are awesome creatures, do you really miss dinosaurs?

I look pretty young for my age so saying I'll be 30 this year is probably not as bad. It's weird though because while 30 is not old per say its usually an age where people expect you to "have your life together". I'm more concerned with that aspect of turning 30 then being considered old.

The beginning of Middle Age can be defined as that moment in your life when you can no longer risk being arrested for having sex with someone half your age.

That means "middle age" starts at about age 35....

... and ends at about 70, when Old Age allegedly begins.

These are just arbitrary values, by the way.

Of course it's arbitrary.

I don't believe I entered "middle age" until I became in my 50's.

...Well, " threescore and ten "/a lifespan of 79-80 would make the mid-30s to 40s old...I am 59. I sometimes get offered senior discounts. They generally kick it at 60-up, but they can start younger. If offered, I say " I'm 59 " - but I'll accept it when tendered. I've even asked about them - always say my age though 8) . I have a beard with considerable gray avaiable, that makes me " older-looking " I suppose. And, my crippledness can be seen :( .
