Is this just wrong information? I see this bit of information everywhere, I have even seen it mentioned on this forum. I feel that autistic people are gifted at MANY things, and often times, people just don't appreciate this amazing way that we have of doing things/ of understanding a particular thing, because they would rather do it their own, inferior way.. like, computer knowledge, artistic capabilities, singing capabilities.. these are three things that i am strong in just off of the top of my head. I am really curious who made up this farce that autistic people are only good at their ONE special thing. It sounds like they are trying to make us sound like we are "special ed". (NO disrespect at all too mentally handicapped folk, but it just sounds like some type of sick joke that some mean neurotypical people made up, and they decided to call it our one special ability because of the association with the word special and mentally handicapped folks). Just like the man that wrote about autist savants classified us as "idiot savants", because he said that we had one amazing, special talent, and were basically idiots otherwise. ...It just sounds like some bullying tactic against autistic people to me, and im not angry, I just wanted others opinions on the matter.

Just misinformation/ignorance. Plenty of people on the spectrum have more than one "gift"...or none at all.

Interesting. I wonder why this is such a widespread "theory" of theirs. It's the only thing that Ive ever heard about autistic capabilities, ever. And the internet is BIG. Of course, these were just from tons of the bigger autistic websites (which is sad..) I'm sure if I dug around on a much lesser known website, I could find differing information. But the sad part is, a lot of people studying autism to know us better, will never see that information..

Because they are ignorant, believe in stereotypes, and they are more comfortable believing the lie that we are sub-human than in believing the truth that we are all people.

It's a bunch of Hooey!

There might be "savants" who are gifted in a few areas, but relatively "weak" in other areas......but very few people with autism are "savants."

Yeah, they want us to think that very few people with autism are savants because the savants are the ones that they tell us are truly gifted.. (but they still call them dumb..) So they say that only a very small amount of people are savants. Aka only a very small amount of autistic people are TRULY gifted. I know we all have amazing gifts.. its all a load of bull! lol. Theyre basically just saying that only a few autistic people are smart when they say that only a few are savants.. we dont need the title of savant and we dont need anyone to tell us that we are gifted, loving, human green beans!

There are very many smart people with autism----but very few true savants.

A savant is someone who, usually, lacks the required intellectual flexibility to be a truly "smart" person.

Savantism, by and large, is something which is not a slam dunk as far as happiness is concerned.

I don't get your point, actually.

I sense that you are saying that autistic people are somehow "the next step in human evolution"----or something like that.

No. I'm not saying that. Imagine saying what you said about savants to someones child. That someone doesnt have the intellectual capacity to do great things. Im just saying, all this savant garbage is a form of brainwashing. No disrespect was meant.

I was talking in general, actually.

I wouldn't tell a parent of a savant that----because what I said might not be true for that particular savant.

It is a fact that there are very few "true savants" around. That's why they're called "savants."

noone lacks the intellectual capability to be a great person or whatever it is that you said. My point that i was making is that "facts" like that are just brainwashing intended to keep autistic people in the dirt.

What keeps autistic people "in the dirt" is the "mores of society."

There are quite a few autistic people, like Temple Grandin, who have been able to transcend the "mores of society" to become successes. She is not a "true savant." But she has "savant" characteristics in how she is able to visualize things.

I was actually replying to the allegation that autistic people are "only gifted in one area." I was, ironically, agreeing with you.

well, no disrespect meant, but i think that telling autistic people that savants are dumb and only have one or two special talents, and that you are only worth anything if you are a dumb savant, could be pretty damaging to autistic people unaware of this manipulation.
