i wonder if a self sufficient co-op community is the answer
hello. Considering the major problems that people with ASD have with the normal world
and especially in terms of employment.
I sometimes wonder if people with ASD should all individually save up and find a really cheap place to
buy land, so as to start a self sufficient community on. Where people with ASD can live independently
together without too much help or interference from the outside world
As to whether that iidea is communism, i don't think so. more like the original gypsies who are outcast
from the normal world, who spend their lives living together on their own
because they don't fit the normal way of the world
not including any of the negative connotations of the word gypsy, i guess more of a romantic vision
of what the term gypsy than the modern stereotype that so many see fault with
i certainly see the benefits of this lifestyle especially if there is support in the community.
the main downside is the rubbish disposal, the need for income to cover food (if there is no source of food) and other purchases and the need to cover health. The usual trappings of the consumer society but perhaps a little less focused.
Perhaps in the future, technology will allow us to live more independently off the grid. While still being able to interface with consumer society if we choose to, rather than be addicted and controlled by it.
Plus, those who need their own environment the most likely also need support from the NT community, so an “Aspie-Only” community simply could not exist.
The idea of a "self-sufficient community" is too ambitious to be realistic, at least at the present time, for the reasons Fnord pointed out.
What we do need, however, is a much bigger and better-organized autistic community/subculture than now exists. For more of my thoughts on this matter, please see:

Once a well-organized subculture has been built, some of our organizations might eventually be able to get funding for something like a "self-sufficient community." But that's certainly not a reasonable short-range goal (unless you personally happen to be very rich and can provide the funding, that is). Nor would it be an ideal situation for most of us even in the long run, for the reasons Fnord pointed out.
But a well-organized subculture could benefit many more of us in many more ways.

Only mildly related, but I find the idea and concept of a Phalanstery fascinating, and kind of wonder if a modern adaptation would be feasable.

I love the idea, but we need to build a much more organized subculture first, in the cheapest way possible, before any of our groups are going to be able to get funding for something like a Phalanstery.
