While this story isn't about autism I think it may very well apply to some of us on the spectrum.

If you live in a toxic environment you should seriously consider the possibility of moving to someplace better suited to your needs.

Is a good idea. Where I live there are only a few houses here. Is a quiet area. It is probably why living here I have been able to hide in that my differences.... Uhmmm. Put it this way. I thouhht I was different as we are all different living up here! Is a reason why it came as a surprize to me that I have asperges traits. So living here means I fit in as we are all a little odd who live up here! Haha!

Couldn't agree more! There are a few people here who's problems are obviously exacerbated by where they live.

Oh yes, I think it can make a huge difference. I once lived in an area where there were a lot of hippies, anarchists and nihilists, and I didn't notice any social anxiety at all, and very little social fatigue. They were fine with eccentric people as long as you weren't a real threat to anybody, and their egalitarian values resonated well with my own. I don't know how people cope with environments where you've got to do everything just like they do no matter how silly you think it is.

There is a problem with that. Since many on the spectrum(including myself) are unemployed, moving for some of us is just not an option.

Other factors could contribute. If you can move are you independent enough to take care of yourself, services that you had before may become unobtainable, the place may be too far from family just in case of an emergency, etc.

For me, the biggest factor here is that it takes years to finish moving- finding new stores, organizing one's gear, and making new associates. That cost has to be balanced against the gamble on the new area being better after familiarization. I had to leave everything I knew to buy a cheap house when the rental laws stopped getting enforced. There were many disillusionments, and then it took me three years to find out if my new neighbour was trying to drive me out or was just a bit thick. It is the latter, but just in case, I have my car fully outfitted for camping this time.

I'm fortunate to live in a decent environment. I live where it's safe and comfortable. On the other end of town where I work, the area is more crime ridden and homelessness is a major problem.
