I am sitting here listening to loud music instead of sleeping, and there is still a beeping noise I can't ignore. It is warning people to not get run over by a small machine when it is in reverse gear. This may be a good idea on a busy job site, but they also go off when the machine noise is the only noise around, and when there are no stray people. I've heard one a full quarter mile from any other anything.
Now that we have cheap, excellent back-up cameras, shouldn't the law be changed? The beeping is more of a hazard than the machine, just not as concentrated.

I think it's an OSHA requirement. I'm a block away from a Wal-Mart that's getting remodeled, and I use a fan on high for their beeping.

I expect there are statistics somewhere that say they save lives, but I've never been a fan of back up alarms and would personally prefer a world without them. I did hear of one in England that used a recording of a particular type of bird instead of the usual horrible beep - the only snag was that they used a recording of a rather rare bird and it wasn't long before bird spotters were going to a lot of trouble to try and spot the bird, till they found out what was going on.

When I used to drive forklifts, we either used the back-up alarms, or if going forward, our horns. It made for a noisy environment (thankfully, we had earplugs) but the other workers around our area needed to know we were there.

Hearing a distant reverse beep would drive me up the wall, you have my sympathy.
