For me there can often be a disjoint between how a person comes across to me in a post , and the degree of disability that's stated .

I have no doubt the same is thought of me . There will be those who come across well but function badly , and those who are the opposite .

There have been a lot of times where I come across as “the opposite”. Even if I don’t right away I’ll show some differences later and then people will distance themselves from me.

On a forum unlike IRL one can reply to one thread at a time, and reply when one pleases. There is no nonverbal language to misinterpret.

That's right. Only one thing to focus on and time to process and respond.

The usual pauses, slight stutter and restlessness in my interactions cant be seen here.

It can be quite...an experience, getting to know folks on a site like this.

A person can be astoundingly articulate and intelligent in their posts, and yet the same person will also recount how they can barely go to the bathroom by themselves, or do anything else even a child can do.

Another person may come off as astoundingly smart, and may even have a high powered job, but...in their posts they take everything literally and cant read between the lines.

If it can sometimes be a source of wonder to us , one can only imagine the incredulity of the general public .

Yes. A NT coworker once described me as being "like an idiot savant" myself.

Yes. That is why we should never assume anything about anyone. I remember one poster in particular, fortunately he is no longer allowed here, but he would criticize people and argue with them about what he felt they should be able to do or not do. Even in real life it is very difficult to know someone's abilities unless you know the person intimately. There is no way to know such details on an online forum without being told. We should all respect each other and not make assumptions to people's functionality levels and we should take them at their word and believe them when they are open and share these things with us

Indeed. I've caused a few jaws to drop by massively exceeding some expectations and then royally screwing up on others. I've heard that we often score very well on some aspects of IQ tests and very badly on others. I sensed an air of suspicion from one or two workplace supervisors who couldn't understand why such an obviously bright employee claimed to be unable to perform certain tasks that were in their opinion dead easy.

I assume we are all much different in "real life" because online we are only sharing our minds. Add in any social context, or practical and functional tasks and you would likely see a very different picture (either more functional than we'd anticipate, or in some cases less).

I know I write a lot and and have a lot of opinions, but in real life you'd see me curled up in a ball accomplishing very little without extreme stress. I probably wouldn't even speak to any of you (no offence -- I go mute). The beauty in autism is that our minds are so vast, despite what an observer may see.

This verbal test by Dr Greg Grove got me listed in the 'World genius directory'.
