The sound has always terrified me. It's not that I'm scared of motorcycles themselves (as people are of spiders, say), but hearing the noise makes my heart rate go up and I feel like I'm in danger. As if it's coming for me and the sound itself will actually consume me when it gets close enough.

Anyone else? I've always wondered if this has to do with Asperger's. The only other bad sounds for me are tornado sirens and heavy footsteps, but those are easily traced back to traumatic experiences for me.

Me too. I can't stand them. It's like an automatic fight-or-flight reaction, and you can't fight a sound so you just hide.

Alarms and crying babies are excruciating as well.

Maybe, maybe not.

I can definitely understand though. I'm actually still scared s**tless of trains, and loud alarms and crying babies also irk the living crud out of me. The sound of bagpipes though, nothing will ever top THAT. I absolutely despise bagpipes, and honestly during childhood I always felt a minor sense of molestation when I'd hear them.

@ Hansgrohe: no Scottish blood running through your veins then ...

I guess in general every loud noise has a negative influence on me. Some sounds make me even nauseous. I hate fireworks and the monthly testing of the airraid sirenes ... makes me think of war, one of my biggest fears.

Not quite terrified, but very startled then hugely on edge is my usual reaction.

Ditto loud bangs (eg balloon bursting), electric drills, vacuum cleaners, screaming kids, dogs barking........

Not really afraid. Motorbike, car, truck and bus noises stress me out really badly. I even get a funny sensation on my tongue when I hear that sort of noise for too long.

Motorcycle sounds kind of scare and annoy me. But not nearly as much as airplane sounds do. Those really freak me out.

I am sensitive to loud sudden noises, some motorcycles especially those with adjustments to their exhausts or muffler are unbearably loud, I'm not frightened by them, but I do experience anxiety when startled by a loud noise.

I'm quite sensitive to motorcycles when I'm driving--especially on the highway. I'm scared I'm going to hit one, with predictably worse results for the motorcyclist. I don't want that to ever happen. I wish there were special highways devoted to motorcycles/mopeds.

Since I've always lived in an urban environment, I actually find the distant sound of motorcycles somewhat soothing--like there's life at that place.

Not afraid of them, but strongly dislike the sound of the louder ones, it's distracting and it gets stressful if I can't get away from it.

Sometimes they scare me a bit, but i'm used to it because i hear it a lot where i live and where i used to live as a child. i'm very used to the sound, otherwise i'd probably be much more afraid.

i hate the sound of motorcycles, hate it. it grates on my nerves. i think one of the reasons i'm not so scared of it is because i know it'll go away in a minute. if it were to go on and on, like one time it did, someone was going around in the neighborhood on his bike over and over again, and my heart raced.

A gigantic irony is that I otherwise obsess over Scottish history for whatever reason. Seriously, I'm actually quite educated in Scottish history to know what the Highland Clearances were, and I know who the Picts were.

I bet most people are afraid of motorcycle sounds, esp. the ones that come up from behind as the motorcycle is driving between two lanes and passing close to one's car.

That's precisely when I feel afraid.

When I am driving on a crowded freeway and a loud motorcycle passes next to me, by weaving between cars (which is common in the SF Bay Area), I sometimes get quite startled. When this happens, I oftentimes will let out a loud gasp and my body may actually shake, albeit very briefly.

I don't like them at all. Same with broken mufflers and trucks. And emergency vehicles - when they turn the siren on when they're next to you. I jump like I've been hit with a shock.
