I was watching jeoparody tournament of champions today, but I turned it off during the middle of double jeoparody because I couldn't comprehend half of the answers that alex was asking. But before I did, I caught one answer about the APGAR test, a test given to newborns right after there born, and then a short time later to gauge how well their doing. I remember my mom telling me that when I was born, I scored rather low on this test both times it was given to me. But the name of the test had slipped my mind.

Did anybody else score low on their APGAR test?

I was born 5 weeks premature. My Apgar score was 7 (according to Wikipedia scores 4-7 are "fairly low"), weight 2370 g, and length 45 cm.

Scoring high or low wouldnt determine if you would have autism or aspergers, it would assess if you were alert after birth, had a healthy colour, were crying or not, so it wouldnt make a difference to a later diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder.

I'm well aware that the test does not screen for autisim, I just put it up here since I was wondering what other members here scored on theirs.

There is good information on Apgar test here. It is a widely used newborn assessment tool - my medical records say "Apgar 7" in the birth section, which was written in 1971 in Poland.

The apgar test measures five things

- Skin tone
- Muscle activity
- Reflexes
- Breathing
- Heart Beat

It's given twice, the first time right after a baby is born, the second time is when the baby is 5 minutes old.

A perfect score would be 10 on the test

My son is PDD and he got 7 at the Apgar test, that is not very high but I'm sure the actual result should have been even lower and it was disguised by the doctors to avoid possible future troubles. Indeed I was there and I remember that my son did'nt cry for very long minutes and he was yellowish. He could hardly breath because his throat was full of liquids and mucus.
I feel sure there is a correlation between these difficulties and my son's problems of today.

I've never heard of this test, but I'm sure if they gave it to me, I would've flunked it. I got here 10 weeks too early, could not breath on my own, liver/kidney function was almost nil, and to top it all off, I had frequent seizures and hemmoraging. Needless to say, it's a constant surprize I'm verbal at all, much less seeming almost normal until someone talks to me  So far, I just must be lucky as heck if all I ended up with is being an Aspie.

My apgar scores were either 7 and 8 or 8 and 9, depending on which set of records you want to believe. The doctors thought those were remarkably high since I had been in distress during the delivery (I was stuck in the birth canal for an extended period of time with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck, they knew or suspected that I had a reduced heart rate because of oxygen deprivation, and they finally did an emergency forceps delivery).

I'm told that I didn't cry like most babies do immediately after birth. I just opened my eyes, turned my head and looked around the room.

Think mine were not perfect but not all that low either. Not sure why.

The Apgar also rates external organ formation. I got a low score on a certain area which I won't divulge here. I got ahold of my birth records a few years ago is how I know. I think I got low scores in the external part and also low in tone, but overall a score of 9 which is kinda weird because I was deprived of oxygen and was damaged by forceps during the 31 hour delivery.
