Or is it something you feel you need to hide from people?

 No.
All they know is that I'm not exactly a typical person... They just don't know it's autism.

It's not something I feel like hiding from anyone. I don't even try passing or bother to hide anything odd.
It's more like I really thought it is something no one else's business to know.

It's not a big deal to me if someone finds out or confronts me about it.
But it's a huge deal for me if I'm the one sharing about it without someone asking or knowing.

Most people consider me eccentric anyway.... But I confide my official "condition" to just a trusted few. There's still too much ignorance and prejudice in the world.

Most of my family know I have ASD because I was diagnosed in childhood so I suppose it got around the family at the time. But they're used to me the way I am and they don't see me as anyone but Joe.

But nobody else knows because I haven't told anyone who wasn't in my life when I was a kid. I just come across to others as a quirky, anxious, hyper person but it doesn't make it obvious to anyone that I have ASD, even if they are ASD themselves! True story. I have a friend who has ASD and she asked me if I have any disabilities. I didn't want to say about ASD, so I said, "I have ADHD." She said that her brother has ADHD and that I'm rather similar to him. So if another Aspie can't guess that I have ASD then NTs definitely can't.

As I have never said to anybody before that I have ASD, I can't picture what their reaction would be. Most likely they probably won't make a big deal out of it, but because I feel so embarrassed about it, I feel like it's just something I'd rather sweep under the rug.

Although autism is more known about these days, it's still got the stigma and the stereotypes and the phobics. Maybe one day society will be forced to accept people with autism just like we are forced to accept homosexuality or different racial backgrounds. These days it is basically a crime not to accept those, so I am waiting for the day to come where it's not PC to be afraid of autism.

Its not a question of most, many, or few. I bring it up if it is relevant to the conversation.
A lot of my customers know I have autism, it helps me with my work.

Most people don't even know I exist. Of those who do, the odds of them knowing about my AS are near zero for casual acquaintances, and near 100% for those closest to me.

No they don’t. I do not go around saying “hello I’m autistic”. I am not trying to hide it out of shame the main reasons for not disclosing is.

1. If the conversation has nothing to do with autism it has nothing to do with autism which are 99.9 percent of the conversations I have.

2. There is so much misunderstanding and the subject is so broad and complex. Usually I am to lazy to want to deal with it. Dealing with it is what Wrong Planet is for.

This. WP is the only place I really talk about it.

My wife knows...and anyone she told I suppose. But to look at me it's not obvious. I don't really run into a lot of people though.

Lol I read this wrong.

Most people I mix with irl know I'm autistic.

Most people I'm friends with irl who are my age are autistic.

Most people I know who are older adults have similar personalities to me but aren't diagnosed.

No, but I just found out two months ago. I have told some people. But I am just trying to understand if there is going to be downsides.

Beyond my close family? No. I don't have a shirt that says 'I have Autism Spectrum Disorder' and I rarely have personal conversations. I would rather that they continue to view me as eccentric without the lens of whatever Autism means to them.

What's the difference between 'eccentric' and 'weird'? I'd like to be eccentric. :)

It is hard to tell. Being on this site and reading disclosure stories the reactions people have gotten range from one extreme to the other and everything inbetween.
