Hi,

I have this condition to some degree, though, I find I don't have much of an issue with it, since it is just my mom and I living together.

see here, http://autism.about.com/od/SymptomsofAu ... Autism.htm

However, why I am writing this topic is that I cannot remember my own face. When I look in the mirror it is like I am seeing something I have not seen in a very long time.

Once I see my face in the mirror, I take a long look and think , yes, this is how it should look, so once I see it, then I can remember that it is the correct face. However, if I look away for a moment, then I nearly, completely forget what it looks like and soon after I completely forget it. It seems I can only have recognition and memory of my face is when I am looking in a mirror.

Is this autism, or do NT people forget what their own face looks like ?

I don't know, but this happens to me as well. I posted about it a few years ago and I recall a couple of others indicated similar.

It's possible to have prosopagnosia without having autism. The fusiform gyrus (part of the brain responsible for face recognition) is tucked pretty well inside one of the folds of the temporal lobe, but something like a stroke or ye auld blunt force trauma can damage that area, causing prosopagnosia in someone who is otherwise NT.

I don't FORGET my face, exactly, but my idea of what it looks like is different from what I see in pictures and even sometimes in mirrors, so it can be jarring.

Also someone who is not autistic can have developmental prosopagnosia.

That's interesting, I've never tried to picture my own face. I can't do it, just my hair, which is distinctive.

I have it mildly. Of course, it doesn't help that I tend to view people peripherally.

This. I don't have face-blindness as far as I know, but I can't seem to get an accurate idea of what I look like.

This...sort of. I look different to myself every time I look in a mirror, and when I look at photos of myself it takes a few moments for me to fully realize "yeah, that's me."

I get that at times. Not always but some times. I have to look at my face and study it to remember what I look like and sometimes I will see myself in the mirror and be surprized to realize it is me!

I remember being in a huge crowd at The Fusion Festival back in 2008 and I was having a hard time finding the group I was with because everybody's face looked the same to me. I did find my group, though.

Our daughter has this! With her it is like she has an inability to find herself or recognize herself. She tends to wear bright colors, has tattoos and facial piercings and has very bright crayon red hair. I think this is so she can "find" herself when she looks in the mirror. She has had to build a sense of self, and it has been quite difficult for her. She often finds herself mirroring the people she is with, or being a chamelon of sorts in different groups. It seems to be sort of a prosopagnosia/ proprioception issue and I do think it is a neurological "thing". She is on meds and goes to regular therapy. She does struggle with several other self image related issues. No answers. It is a hard way to have to go through life. She is doing better now than when she was in her teens, but still a struggle for her. You are not alone!
